Book Description
Excerpt from Letter on the Situation of France, Written From Dresden, to a Friend at Paris, Vol. 6 This letter was sent by post to the person, for whom it was intended; but as from a cause not difficult of discovery, it never reached him, we feel authorised to give it circulation through the public press. I have received, my friend, your interesting letter. You require me to answer it frankly and without equivocation. This is no easy commission; for a Frenchman must be susceptible on such a subject. But my task is alleviated by the general opinion, which does justice to your personal conduct, and to those sentiments whereby you have constantly been actuated, under every crisis of fortune and situation. Book Description
A New York Review Books Original During the eighteenth century, from the death of Louis XIV until the Revolution, French culture set the standard for all of Europe. In Sweden, Austria, Italy, Spain, England, Russia, and Germany, among kings and queens, diplomats, military leaders, writers, aristocrats, and artists, French was the universal language of politics and intellectual life. In When the World Spoke French, Marc Fumaroli presents a gallery of portraits of Europeans and Americans who conversed and corresponded in French, along with excerpts from their letters or other writings. These men and women, despite their differences, were all irresistibly attracted to the ideal of human happiness inspired by the Enlightenment, whose capital was Paris and whose king was Voltaire. Whether they were in Paris or far away, speaking French connected them in spirit with all those who desired to emulate Parisian tastes, style of life, and social pleasures. Their stories are testaments to the appeal of that famous “sweetness of life” nourished by France and its language.

Book Description
Excerpt from Letters From a Citizen of the World, to His Friends in the East, Vol. 1 How comes it, said they, that the Euro peans, so remote from China, think with so much justice and precision They have never read our books, they scarcely know even our letters, and yet they talk and reason just as we do. The truth is, the Chinese and we are pretty much alike. Different degrees of refinement, and not of. Distance, mark the distinctions among mankind. Savages of the most opposite climates have all but one charac ter, of improvidenceand rapacity; and tutored nations, however separate, make use of the very same methods to procure refined enjoy ment. The distinctions of polite nations are. Few but such as are peculiar to_the Chinese, ap pear, in every page of the following corres pondence. The metaphors and illusions are all drawn from the East. Their formality our author carefully preserves. Many of their favourite tenets in morals are illustrated. The Chinese are always concise, so is he. Simple, so is he. The Chinese are grave and senten tious, so is be. But in one particular the resemblance is peculiarly striking: the Chi aese are often dull; and so is he. Nor has my assistance been wanting. We are told in an old romance of a certain knight-errant and his horse who contracted an intimate friend ship. The horse most usually bore the knight.
