Book Description
Today international law is everywhere. Wars are fought and opposed in its name. It is invoked to claim rights and to challenge them, to indict or support political leaders, to distribute resources and to expand or limit the powers of domestic and international institutions. International law is part of the way political (and economic) power is used, critiqued, and sometimes limited. Despite its claim for neutrality and impartiality, it is implicit in what is just, as well as what is unjust in the world. To understand its operation requires shedding its ideological spell and examining it with a cold eye. Who are its winners, and who are its losers? How - if at all - can it be used to make a better or a less unjust world? In this collection of essays Professor Martti Koskenniemi, a well-known practitioner and a leading theorist and historian of international law, examines the recent debates on humanitarian intervention, collective security, protection of human rights and the 'fight against impunity' and reflects on the use of the professional techniques of international law to intervene politically. The essays both illustrate and expand his influential theory of the role of international law in international politics. The book is prefaced with an introduction by Professor Emmanuelle Jouannet (Sorbonne Law School), which locates the texts in the overall thought and work of Martti Koskenniemi.

Book Description
In Philosophy of Law, Andrei Marmor provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary debates about the fundamental nature of law—an issue that has been at the heart of legal philosophy for centuries. What the law is seems to be a matter of fact, but this fact has normative significance: it tells people what they ought to do. Marmor argues that the myriad questions raised by the factual and normative features of law actually depend on the possibility of reduction—whether the legal domain can be explained in terms of something else, more foundational in nature. In addition to exploring the major issues in contemporary legal thought, Philosophy of Law provides a critical analysis of the people and ideas that have dominated the field in past centuries. It will be essential reading for anyone curious about the nature of law.

Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures, Legal, Political and Historical, on the Sciences of Law and Politics: Home and Foreign Affairs; And John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount of Dundee, and His Times However, in consequence of the vacancy which will shortly occur in the parliamentary representation of Dundee, or, at least, in consequence of the opportunities which, I hope, will arise at, or before, the next General Parliamentary Election, I do not feel that there is any imperative necessity for explaining my political opinions at present. With pertinacious obstinacy, I have explained, in Dundee and elsewhere, what these are, and have made no secret about my preference to represent my native town of Dundee, in the House of Commons, rather than any other constituency. At the General Election of 1885, I thought my time for contesting Dundee as an independent Conservative candidate had, at length, arrived. But, although I had issued my address to the Electors, I retired from the contest in order to give the official Conservative candidate the advantage of having no Conservative opponent, and to save myself the expense of an unsuccessful contest, and, as future circumstances.
