Two major strands of theology have developed in Africa--inculturation and liberation--each in response to different needs. Emmanuel Martey's African Theology provides a clear, scholarly examination of these two basic approaches, solidly based on Martey's understanding of contemporary theology and his firsthand knowledge of Africa.Martey first examines the historical background of each of these theological developments, especially relating to cultural and political movements enveloping the continent in the 1970s. In sub-Saharan Africa, struggles for independence from colonizers have resulted in inculturation theology. The defining aspect of this theology is that it pushes its roots firmly in African culture and traditions. In South Africa, on the other hand, Black Africans struggling against the oppressive systems of apartheid have turned to liberation theology.Martey shows how the real hope for African theology lies in the dialectical encounter between these two approaches and in their potential for convergence. "The two foci (of liberation and inculturation)," Martey says, "are not contradictory, but complement each other." En effet, la politique coloniale et la période missionnaire n'ont pas pris suffisamment en compte l'importance de la culture africaine. Contraints d'adopter l'interprétation du message évangélique sans aucun recours à leur propre tradition et vision du monde, les Noirs ont été forcés d'entrer dans la façon de vivre, d'agir et de penser des Occidentaux. Le mouvement de la Négritude et les écrivains noirs furent les premiers à critiquer cet état de choses. Les théologiens africains leur emboîtèrent le pas en élargissant la problématique au domaine de la foi chrétienne. La théologie africaine qui, dans les années postconciliaires, a fait beaucoup parler d'elle, ne semble plus faire preuve de la même vitalité ces dernières années. Ce silence apparent peut s'expliquer par la situation difficile que traverse le continent noir, oublié par la communauté internationale. L'Afrique n'est connue que pour ses misères: la récession économique, le sida, les guerres ... La situation dans laquelle vivent les théologiens et les théologiennes ne leur permet pas de se consacrer adéquatement à la recherche, à l'instar de leurs collègues des pays occidentaux. Pourtant, malgré ce que pensent plus d'un, la théologie africaine n'est pas morte, elle est bien vivante!

Bujo takes traditional African values to the horizon of contemporary social issues: extreme poverty, mass unemployment, rapid urbanization, changing family life. His underlying concern is for the African people and for the models they will choose for their society, their economy, their church. Bujo begins with Jesus.
