Book Description
Excerpt from Lake Michigan Water Quality Report, 1988 Evaluation of the water quality of the southwest portion of Lake Michigan is based on standards as set by the Illinois Pollution Control Board (35 IL Adm Code Because it is a unique and invaluable resource, Lake Michigan is protected to a higher level than other lakes in the State. Its waters are required to meet: Lake Michigan Standards, General Use Standards and Public and Food Processing Nater Supply Standards. Additionally, a criterion for beach closure was also used in this evaluation (toph, The water quality of the Illinois area of Lake Michigan has improved substantially since the 19605 and 19705 due to diversion of municipal and industrial treated wastewater discharges away from Lake Michigan to the Des Plaines River Basin. Discharges along the Illinois shore now consist primarily of cooling water and some combined sewer overflows. Major sources of pollutants along the Illinois shore of Lake Michigan are atmospheric deposition, urban runoff and ih-place contaminants. Book Description
Excerpt from Lake Michigan Water Quality Report: January Through December 1979 A summary of the annual water quality data obtained from the 1979 Lake Michigan Survey Program is presented in a Summary Table (table I). The bacterial and chemical data collected during 1979 when compared to the previous 10 years illustrate water quality improvement in southwestern Lake Michigan. The results for the 1979 survey season indicate a continued downward trend in total coliform levels for the North Shore and South Shore Surveys. Average levels for the South Shore Survey continue to remain high. However, the 1979 average was the lowest since 1975, which may indicate a general downward trend for the South Shore Survey Stations. Fecal coliform geometric mean values remain three to four times higher for the South Shore Surveys than for the North Shore. Geometric means for the North South Shore Surveys are well below the water quality standard limit of 20 per 100 ml. Fecal coliform geometric mean levels for 1979 vary little from those of the past ten years for the North and South Shore Surveys with no significant change apparent during this time. The Open Water Survey geometric means remain 0 per 100 ml. (figures 9 14) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Lake Michigan Shore and Open Water Report, 1972 The Lake County Health Department, in 1969, evaluated the combined bacterial data of their own sampling program as well as that of the North Shore Sanitary District and the Illinois Department of Public Health. They then recommended suspension of bathing at the Lake County beaches until the completion of engineering improvements which will prevent the discharge of sewage to the lake. Although certain interim improvements have been completed, the Lake County Health Department has maintained its 1969 recommendations. Additional guidelines for evaluating the suitability of bathing beaches became effective in May 1972 under the Illinois Department of Public Health rules and regulations (paragraph 4.10a). The regulation requires that water quality shall be evaluated by physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics. The individual municipalities and park districts are ultimately responsible for either following the Lake County Health Department recommendations or allowing swimming at their beaches. Most of the local authorities have fol lowed the recommendations and posted either no swimming or swim at your own risk signs. Waukegan initiated a daily bacterial sampling program at its beaches and Opens or closes them based on this information.
