Book Description
Jordan stands in the middle of a turbulent region, experiencing substantial refugee flows and economic challenges due to the conflict and insecurity of its neighbors. The Jordanian Labor Market: Between Fragility and Resilience fills an enormous gap in our knowledge regarding the region's labor market during a period of substantial instability and new challenges for Jordan. Prior to the refugee crisis the Jordanian economy and labor market had been shifting in a positive direction. An enormous influx of Syrian refugees, however, created unanswered questions of how the region's labor market would fare. The Jordanian Labor Market leverages the 2016 Jordan Labor Market Panel Survey to provide answers to some of these questions. It offers an unprecedented opportunity to assess the challenges that Jordan faces. It addresses key economic and policy questions through unparalleled nationally representative date. The Jordanian Labor Market presents critical new insights into the status of migrants and refugees in Jordan. It examines key indicators of the labor market including labor supply, job creation, wages and inequality, and self-employment. It also looks at transitions across the life course in Jordan such as education, school-to-work transition, marriage and fertility, housing and new households, and social insurance and retirement. These factors provide important insight into important challenges Jordan's economy and society faces.

Book Description
International migration has been subject to many studies, conducted by academics, students, policy makers, and in civil society. As the migration flows continue to increase amongst countries, new dynamics shape international politics, economy, and culture. In this context, the main purpose of this book is to present a contemporary understanding of international migration through an interdisciplinary analysis. The authors investigate migration and its dynamics in different perspectives (cultural, economic, political, judicial, and sociological) by considering the latest changes in the international relations agenda. This book sheds light on different minor aspects of international migration in a critical perspective.

The world's attention to the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has often been dominated by headline issues: conflict, sanctions, political turmoil, and rising oil prices. Little of this international attention has considered the broad range of development challenges facing this diverse group of countries. Breaking the Barriers reflects the collected thinking of the World Bank's Office of the Chief Economist for the MENA Region on the long-term development challenges facing the region and the reform priorities and strategies for effectively meeting these challenges. Book Description
While oil wealth has enriched some Middle East Arab nations, others that lack oil resources have remained poor and are looking now to their oil-rich neighbors for development assistance. This collection of studies on the economic, social, and political relationships between the haves and the have-nots in the Middle East focuses on Egypt-the largest state in the region-and on its prospects for change based on financial assistance from other Arab countries. The authors have many disagreements about the future of both rich and poor nations in the Middle East and considerable skepticism about the possibility of transforming Egypt, but they do agree that the future must be projected in the framework of a new regional order in which oil wealth, labor migration, and liberalized national economies are fundamental realities.

Book Description
The basic objective of agricultural research at ICARDA is to enhance pro ducer and consumer welfare through increasing the productivity, stability, and profitability of agriculture. Improved practices must be technically, ec onomically, and socially suitable to farmer conditions. The rainfed areas of West Asia and North Africa have highly variable environmental conditions as well as complex social and economic structures. In recent years, the region has been experiencing major changes in the relative availabilities and costs of the classical factors of production: land, labor, and capital. These changes have important implications for the design of new agricultural technology. On the one hand, the availability of labor may be an important factor determining the acceptability of new technology. On the other, it is important to consider the impact that technology can have on rural employment. To develop a better awareness of these issues and their relevance to technology development, ICARD A initiated a project on Agricultural Labor and Tech nological Change. The first stage of the project is published here; it is a review of available literature on selected issues of regional importance, com bined with more detailed analyses of the situations of eight countries with important rainfed agricultural sectors. ICARDA greatly appreciates the financial assistance of the Ford Foun dation, which allowed us to support the execution of the study and publi cation of its findings. We also appreciate the great efforts of the authors in the face of often limited data and facilities.
