Social Town Planning
Author: Clara Greed
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134692412
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 306
Book Description
Many issues such as access for the disabled, childcare facilities, environmental matters, and ethnic minority issues are excluded from town planning considerations by planning authorities. This book introduces the concept of `social town planning' to integrate planning policy and practices with the cultural and social issues of the people they are planning for. Part 1 provides background on the development of a social dimension to the predominantly physical, land use based, British town planning system. Part 2 investigates a representative selection of minority planning topics, in respect of gender, race, age and disability, cross-linked to the implications for mainstream policy areas such as housing, rural planning and transport. Part 3 discusses the likely influence of a range of global and European policy initiatives and organisations in changing the agenda of British town planning. Planning for healthy cities, sustainability, social cohesion, and equity are discussed. Part 4 looks at `the problem' from a cultural perspective, arguing that a great weakness in the British system, resulting in ugly and impractical urban design, has been the lack of concern among planners with social activities and cultural diversity. Alternative, more culturally inclusive approaches to planning are presented which might transcend the social/spatial dichotomy, such as urban time planning. Concluding that the process of planning must change, the authors ague that the culture and composition of the planning profession must particularly change to be more representative and reflective of the people they are `planning for', in terms of gender, race and minority composition.

Scotland
Author: Dennis Smith
Publisher: Oxford, England : Clio Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 490
Book Description
Scotland is probably the only sovereign nation to have chosen, in a more or less free vote, to surrender its independence in order to merge with a larger, more powerful, neighbour. For most of the period since the Union of 1707 the Scots were enthusiastic partners with England in creating and administering the British Empire. Inevitably, therefore, the end of empire caused an identity crisis in Scotland. For more than a Century pressure for political home rule produced no tangible result; however, the decisive vote in favour of devolution in the referendum of September 1997 means that a restored Scottish Parliament is now likely to be in place by the millennium. Irrespective of political developments, the last two decades have seen a renaissance in Scottish culture and historiography. This bibliography fully reflects the wealth of new developments in Scottish life and culture over the past twenty years and the new vibrancy of Scottish publishing.

Perspectives on British Rural Planning Policy, 1994-97
Author: Andrew W. Gilg
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429822375
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 203
Book Description
First published in 1999, this volume explores the issue of rural planning, which has become a complex activity in which policies in one area have important ramifications in other policy areas. It is thus very important for all those involved in rural planning affairs to remain not only up to date, but to place recent developments in a longer perspective. This new series aims to answer all these needs by providing an accurate and informed account of recent developments in North American, British and European rural policy, and critiques of policy implementation and its impacts from new material and from analyses of published research findings. This second volume in the series covers the last few years of the John Major administration until the election of the Tony Blair government in May 1997. It is divided into six chapters: overview of changes affecting all rural planning activities; the environment; town and country planning; extensive land uses; nature conservation and recreation; and social land economic issues. The next British volume will cover the entire period of the current government, with successive volumes covering each new government as it unfolds.
