Observations on the Pell Proceedings
Author: Frank Brennan
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781922449535
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 162
Book Description
Cardinal George Pell pleaded not guilty before a jury to child sexual assault charges in 2018. The public knew little of the proceedings because the trial judge had imposed a suppression order, prohibiting the media from publicising the evidence and court proceedings. Fr Frank Brennan SJ was asked by the Australian Catholic bishops to follow the proceedings and to offer commentary on the conduct of the proceedings once the suppression orders were lifted. The bishops asked that the commentary be seen, as far as possible, to be clear, objective and impartial. Cardinal Pell granted Brennan access to the published transcript of the proceedings. At the first trial, the jury could not reach agreement. So Pell was tried again when the jury convicted him of all five charges. Brennan attended critical parts of both trials, as well as the unsuccessful appeal before Victorian Supreme Court and the successful appeal in the High Court of Australia with all seven members of the nation's highest court acquitting Pell of all charges on 7 April 2020. After the initial conviction and after the ultimate acquittal, Brennan wrote a series of articles and was interviewed in the media. This book provides a chronology of his reportage, including an assessment of the flawed adverse findings made against Pell by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Brennan identifies the failures of the Victoria police, prosecution authorities, and Victoria's two most senior judges. Brennan concludes that these failures 'did nothing to help the efforts being made to address the trauma of institutional child sexual abuse. As a society we need to do better, and the legal system needs to play its part.'

Catholic Values and Australian Realities
Author: James Franklin
Publisher: Connor Court Publishing Pty Ltd
ISBN: 0975801546
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 149
Book Description
Australian Catholics have made a unique contribution to the nation. At its centre is a solid grasp of the objectivity of ethics. Persons or societies cannot "choose their own values", because what is right and wrong is founded in the way things are. In his wide-ranging book on Australian Catholic thought and action, James Franklin, author of the much-praised polemical history of Australian philosophy, Corrupting the Youth, shows how core Catholic values have played out in the issues where Catholics have challenged their host society - in debates on land rights, immigration and values in schools, and in combats with Freemasons, Protestants and Communists.

Ireland's Empire

Category : History

Book Description
How did the Irish stay Irish? Why are Irish and Catholic still so often synonymous in the English-speaking world? Ireland's Empire is the first book to examine the complex relationship between Irish migrants and Roman Catholicism in the nineteenth century on a truly global basis. Drawing on more than 100 archives on five continents, Colin Barr traces the spread of Irish Roman Catholicism across the English-speaking world and explains how the Catholic Church became the vehicle for Irish diasporic identity in the United States, Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Newfoundland, and India between 1829 and 1914. The world these Irish Catholic bishops, priests, nuns, and laity created endured long into the twentieth century, and its legacy is still present today.

Rome in Australia: The Papacy and Conflict in the Australian Catholic Missions, 1834-1884 (set 2 volumes)
Author: Christopher Dowd
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 904744308X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 696
Book Description
The founding of the Catholic missions in Australia coincided with the defining drift of power and prestige within the nineteenth-century Church. This was a period of chronic dissension among Australia's Catholic communities, powerfully drawn by the ultramontane impulse and political manoeuvring to refer their problems to the Pope. Roman bureaucratic control, exercised through the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide, was the single most important factor in the resolution of these problems and, consequently, in the determinative shaping of the colonial Australian Church. Based on extensive archival research, this study explores issues of process, politics and personality in the formulation of papal policy towards a part of the world that could not be more distant from Rome.
