Book Description
The statutory duty of public service ombudsmen (PSO) is to investigate claims of injustice caused by maladministration in the provision of public services. This book examines the modern role of the ombudsman within the overall emerging system of administrative justice and makes recommendations as to how PSO should optimize their potential within the wider administrative justice context. Recent developments are discussed and long standing questions that have yet to be adequately resolved in the ombudsman community are re-evaluated given broader changes in the administrative justice sector. The work balances theory and empirical research conducted in a number of common law countries. Although there has been much debate within the ombudsman community in recent years aimed at developing and improving the practice of ombudsmanry, this work represents a significant advance on current academic understanding of the discipline.

Book Description
Richard Titmuss was one of the 20th century's foremost social policy theorists. This accessible Reader is the first compendium of his work on public health, health promotion and health inequalities. Most of Titmuss's work has been out of print for many years. This volume, like its predecessor, Welfare and wellbeing (The Policy Press, 2001), is important in bringing the work of this highly influential thinker to the attention of a new generation of social policy students and policy makers. It also enhances current debates about how complex societies can best provide for the health of all their citizens.

Book Description
This basic textbook of Community Medicine, which includes descriptions of the related social ~ervices, is intended for a wide range of readers who require knowledge and understanding of the essential aspects of the subject. These include undergraduate medical students and qualified doctors who are engaged in postgraduate courses of study or training schemes, particularly those in community medicine and general practice. When writing this book we also had in mi nd the needs of students of nursing at all levels at a time when an increasing emphasis on the community is being reflected in the content of curricula and the composition of examination papers. It is our view that this account of community medicine will also be of value to established practitioners -community physicians, community health doctors, senior nurses and health visitors - who wish to con solidate or update their knowledge. The growing involvement of the professions in the management and planning of health services means that many general practitioners, hospital doctors and nurses are being called upon to take a population perspective and to become acquainted with many of the concepts and issues discussed in this book. In addition, there are those professionals who work closely with medicine and nursing and have a common concern in providing care and promoting prevention -groups such as social workers and health education personnel. For all these reasons we would ho pe that many groups might read the book and find it useful.

Book Description
This unique work represents the recording and analysis of oral history interviews conducted by the pioneering general practitioner Dr Hetty Ockrim with over seventy patients, as well as office staff and members of the nursing team, between 1989 and 1992 in her former practice in the Ibrox/Govan areas of Glasgow, places of significant socio-economic deprivation. Her focus in undertaking this study was on personal and social, rather than just clinical, issues. The interviews are accompanied by background and commentary for the study, reflecting the full breadth of general practice. Many of the interviewees had memories stretching back before the NHS, providing a unique historical perspective of service development, as well as invaluable directions for improving current and future general practice. Key Features Provides a historical context for the developments in health over several decades prior to the study Shows how oral history methods have increasingly been used in medical history research and explores the benefits of this approach Covers many of the themes of the oral history which enabled and encouraged patients to comment on what was important to them in their encounters with health care Follows the increasing acceptance of women in medicine, demonstrating how women doctors were viewed by patients within the practice compared to changes in wider society Presents a ‘history from below’, using voices that are not normally heard in the medical discourse, illustrating the importance of the doctor–patient interface Supporting a wider understanding of what patient narratives can tell us about the delivery of health care from the perspective of the patients, the front-line users of health services, the book show how oral history can provide an understanding of health care more broadly, key at a time when social inequality is once again widening in many regions.
