Conformément à la politique de l'adaptation scolaire adoptée au Québec en 1999, le ministère de l'éducation, du Loisir et du Sport préconise que l'intégration scolaire soit le moyen privilégié d'enseignement auprès de tous les élèves. Or intervenir en classe ordinaire pour répondre aux besoins de tout élève, qu'il présente ou non des difficultés dans son parcours scolaire, représente le plus grand défi des enseignants. Mal préparés pour faire face à une classe incluant des élèves en difficulté, ils déplorent le peu ou le manque d'information et de soutien qu'ils reçoivent. Il importe donc d'identifier des pratiques de classe pouvant nourrir leur réflexion et mieux les orienter au regard des interventions éducatives efficaces dans un contexte d'intégration scolaire. C'est le but poursuivi par cet ouvrage. Il s'inspire d'une recherche de terrain menée dans la classe d'une enseignante exceptionnelle, Calypso, dont les interventions se sont révélées fructueuses à plusieurs égards. Les pratiques de classe de Calypso sont décrites et analysées selon quatre volets: la gestion de classe, la qualité de la relation maître-élèves, l'enseignement du français et l'enseignement des mathématiques. Les fondements philosophiques de Calypso en matière d'éducation, ainsi que la pertinence et la cohérence de l'ensemble de ses actions, sont une source de réflexion d'une grande richesse. La pratique d'une enseignante est une totalité complexe et, dans l'activité en classe, les interventions qui relèvent de chacune des dimensions cognitive, médiative, affective, sociale et institutionnelle sont interdépendantes. C'est leur conjonction au cours de l'action, de manière stable et récurrente, qui crée les conditions favorables à l'apprentissage, comme il a été possible de l'observer dans la classe de Calypso.
