Occupational Injuries and Workplace Risks
Author: Simo Salminen
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 152752857X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that, worldwide, there are around 340 million occupational accidents annually. Moreover, the underreporting of occupational accidents, injuries and fatalities is giving a false picture of the real scope of the problem. In addition to human suffering, occupational injuries are a serious public-health problem and cause considerable economic losses. This book describes how employees’ individual properties, such as gender, age, and health status affect their vulnerability to suffering occupational injuries. It explores the effects of different ways of organising work, such as precarious work and shift work, on risk rates. Further, it looks at the risk sources encountered by workers in a number of industrial environments, such as transportation, construction sites, manufacturing plants, forestry, fishing, and mines. It also touches on more recent trends in this sector, such as migration and climate change.

Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 329
Book Description
This book benefited from the financial support of a French Government scholarship between 1976 and 1978. It sponsored a doctoral thesis in which initial theoretical, empirical, and historical reflections on acci dents were developed and written while I was a student at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. The New Zealand Depart ment of Labour funded a study on industrial accidents and night work during 1979-80. In 1982-83, the award of a postdoctoral fellowship by the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) permitted a first version of this book to be finished. In the summer of 1986-87 the Funda~ao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) and the Labora toire d'Ergonomie et de Neurophysiologie du Travail of the Centre Na tional des Arts et Metiers joined forces to fund a stay in Paris where the second draft of this book was presented in a special doctoral seminar series. The third draft was completed during a 1988 research leave granted by the Conjunto de Ciencia Politica of the Universidade Es tadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). On a further research leave from the same unit, and thanks to a postdoctoral fellowship from the Brazilian Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnol6gico (CNPq), final redrafting was carried out between August and October 1990 when I was a visiting fellow in the Science, Technology, and Society Program at Cornell University. I am deeply grateful to these institutions for their generosity.

The Industrial Accident Investigation Techniques Manual
Author: Capt. Nicholas Pacalo USN (ret.) MS CSP & Dr. Patrick Pacalo CP
Publisher: PublishAmerica
ISBN: 1462606113
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 47
Book Description
The Industrial Accident Investigation Techniques Manual This publication is intended for personnel involved in safety, management, safety committee members, university students, and others involved in industry. It is systematic in approach to conducting an investigation including generic techniques and procedures that will be beneficial regardless of the type of accident (e.g. automobile, industrial machinery, power tools, aircraft, and falls). The importance of finding all causes is stressed (e.g. direct cause, indirect cause, root cause, primary cause, and secondary cause). Causes must be coupled to specific recommendations that will prevent the accident from recurring in the future. This book also shows that a system of investigation follow-up must be instituted.

Modern Accident Investigation and Analysis
Author: Ted S. Ferry
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780471624813
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 348
Book Description
This new edition of a standard in the field is the most complete treatment available on modern methods of accident investigation. Techniques discussed are general and can be applied to a wide range of industrial accidents. Topics covered include investigation concepts, the pitfalls of government intervention, legal aspects, multilinear events sequencing, and management oversight and risk tree (MORT). There is new material on the electronic and computer industries and on S-T-E-P accident investigation. A new chapter, ``A Generic Approach to Mishap Investigation,'' puts the entire process in perspective.
