Book Description
Excerpt from Index to the Periodicals of 1902 The new volume of the Annual Index to Periodicals, which has now been completed, does for the periodicals of 1903 what the previous twelve volumes Of the Annual Index have done for. The years 1890 - I90I inclusive. There is a story told. Of the writer Of a recent famous biography to the effect that he found the already existing literature Of his subject so voluminous that he began his task Of perusing it by rejecting all the books and biographies which contained no index. Now an index has been aptly described as the bag and baggage Of a book, Of more use than honour; even such who seemingly slight it, secretly using it, if not for need, for speed of what they desire to find. If this be true Of the index to a book, how much more true must it be of an index which arranges and classifies for permanent reference all the articles Of any importance which have been published throughout the year in the pages of nearly two hundred files Of reviews and magazines? The compilation of a Catalogue is invariably looked upon as an extraordinary piece of labour. To say the least, the compilation of a catalogue does not usually represent more work than an index of similar dimensions; and very Often a catalogue is nothing more than a mechanical alphabetical arrangement. Of the books by author and title, without any reference to the subject matter at all, except, perhaps, where the subject happens to be indicated in the title. When, however, any Classification is attempted, it is only a very general one as a rule, and the titles of books are rarely repeated more than once or twice in the catalogue. To compile a catalogue on a more extensive scale would no doubt represent an enormous labour for each library, but it might be worth while to do something Of the kind once for all for use in all libraries, and have it kept up to date by supplements issued at regular intervals. Under the present system each library publishes its own catalogue to much the same Class Of books, and the labour is done over and over again. Book Description
Excerpt from The Index, 1902 In 1868 the family moved west and settled on a farm in Perry, Pike county, Illinois. Here the remainder of his boyhood was spent in a home well provided with books and periodicals. At this period he read everything within his reach and obtained a large fund of general information. A farm hand who was something of a naturalist, gave him a strong impulse toward natural science and started him in the study of botany and zoology by the rational method. An inspiration to theory, mathematics and literature he now credits to Joseph Dobbins, a former student of our university. In 1873 Mr. Felmley enrolled at Blackburn University, Carlinville, Illinois, where he remained three years, devoting most of his time to a study of the classics. At the age of nineteen he entered the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with advanced stand ing, and was graduated in three years. In college, he ranked high as a student and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of the faculty. He was very active in the literary societies and in the debates, and was fond of games and sports. His college course was broken at the end of the second year, by two years of teaching, one in the country near Virden, Illinois, and the other at Carrollton, Illinois. Book Description
Excerpt from Poole's Index to Periodical Literature: Fourth Supplement, From January 1, 1897 to January 1, 1902 The difficulty here referred to has not abated since these words were printed, and modern instances as grievous as those cited above might be given. In fact, under the present well-recognized tendency of periodical publishing, as of book-publishing too, to trim sails constantly to catch every possible fickle breeze of public favor (raising the wind being after all the most prominent object in view), the changes in form, style, frequency of publication, arrangement of vol umes, and other important particulars, are such as to be fairly distracting to those who attempt either to make or to use such a guide as this Index aims to be. Book Description
Excerpt from Poole's Index to Periodical Literature: Fifth Supplement, From January 1, 1902 to January 1, 1907 With the great increase in the number of excellent periodicals, growth in the size of these Supplements is inevitable, and it will be noticed that this issue contains ten per cent. More pages than its predecessor. It covers 190 different periodicals as against 170 in the last volume, and indexes 1360 volumes. It will be observed on examining the Chronological Conspectus prefixed to this volume that of the 232 sets included in the edition of 1882 only 49 are continued in this Supplement, while 141 newer ones are here included. Of this number 33 appear in this Supplement for the first time, a portion of these being new ven tures, started during the period or just before its beginning, and others represent ing the effort to fulfil the promise that older serials worthy of being indexed should be taken up in the Supplements. Special pains have been taken to include in this volume references to a large number of college and university publications, making the index of special value to the larger libraries; while at the same time it has not been in the least weak ened on the more popular side. Among these additions to the list, special atten tion may well be called to the Princeton University Bulletin, 15 vols, the Catholic University Bulletin, 12 vols, the University of Chicago Record, 10 vols, the Co lumbia University Quarterly, 8 vols, the California University Chronicle, 8 vols, the Wisconsin Alumni Magazine, 7 vols, and the Technology Review, 8 vols. While these periodicals are quite largely occupied with matters pertaining to the institutions issuing them, such matter not being of value for the purpose of this Index, they also have many papers of importance on live subjects, and it is thought that their inclusion will be appreciated in all the larger libraries. Book Description
Excerpt from General Index to the First Twenty Volumes of the Geographical Journal: 1893-1902 This Index is reconstructed and edited from the current indices to the half-yearly volumes, I.-XX., of the Geographical Journal. Entries, textual and bibliographical, are generally classified under (a) topographical names, (b) surnames of authors, travellers, etc. Books are sometimes indexed separately under their titles. Entries under terms, concrete or abstract, are avoided as far as possible, except where a term (e.g. Cartography; Geography; Oceanography; Mountains; Rivers; Education; Trade) naturally carries under it a large number of entries in a geographical connection. Books are alphabetized simply by their titles, omitting "A," "The," or their foreign equivalents Bock-titles are abbreviated where necessary. Topographical entries are decentralized as far as possible, e.g. under the name of a country there appear only entries referring to that country generally, or parts of it indefinable under one geographical name. Any one of its political divisions, towns, physical features, etc., as considered by itself, is indexed separately. In the case of a large entry (e.g. under a country), material is classified according to subjects only where feasible; for the rest, entries are simply alphabetized, as to index wholly by subjects was found to be inexpedient. The following signs are employed: - * following a reference-number signifies a paper or long article, to be consulted for general information, etc. signifies a bibliographical entry in "Geographical Literature of the Month," either following a reference-number or preceding a series of numbers. signifies a review or analysis. An entry without distinguishing sign signifies a short article or note, or refers to information contained in a longer article.
