The development of a coastal ocean circulation model involves many challenges, including the interaction of complex coastline and topography and the prediction of mesoscale oceanographic features. The Innovative Coastal-Ocean Observing Network (ICON) developed a Monterey Bay ocean circulation model to resolve these challenges. This study examines two different ICON model cases. The first ICON model case was forced with the 100 km NOGAPS winds while the other was forced with the 9 km COAMPS winds. The comparison demonstrated that the 9 km COAMPS-forced case produced better resolution of the ocean mesoscale. This was shown through examination of the daily sea surface temperature fields and the daily surface ocean currents. Time series of sea surface temperature showed a strong seasonal cycle. After removal of the seasonal cycle, the existence of mesoscale features was even more dramatic. A case study at Pt. Sur showed the evolution of mesoscale features associated with an upwelling event.

The water currents and the wave field at the Catalan coast (in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) are investigated. However, the main research is focused at the northern margin of the Ebro Shelf, where there is a relatively high amount of data for study purposes and where episodes of strong northwesterly wind occur. In such cases, the wind is channeled through the Ebro Valley and intensifies upon reaching the sea, resulting in a wind jet. The research has been divided into four parts: (1) the study of the water circulation induced by a wind jet, by means of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) numerical model; (2) the study of the waves dynamics induced by a wind jet, using the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) numerical model; (3) the study of the wave-current interactions during wind-jet events, coupling the numerical models used formerly; and (4) the implementation and validation of a waves and currents forecasting system at the Catalan coast, based on the knowledge gained during the research performed in the previous parts.

The Norwegian coastal current originates primarily from the freshwater outflow from the Baltic and the freshwater runoff from Norway. It flows northwards along the coast of Norway as a low-salinity current. This coastal region is the spawning ground for a number of important oceanic fish stocks, and the physical environment has an impact on the recruitment, growth, and geographical distribution of these stocks. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Institute of Marine Research in Norway established a coastal oceanographic observation system. This continued to evolve, and its core elements are still in operation. Drawing on the results generated by this observation system, as well as by other coastal studies, this book reviews the current understanding of the physical/chemical conditions in the Norwegian coastal current in such a way as to make the material more easily accessible to non-specialists. A series of chapters introduces readers to the geography, currents, water masses, and the temporal and spatial variability of the Norwegian coastal current. Interannual fluctuations in physical conditions are most likely to be the prime cause of ecosystem variability. The editor hopes that this book will act as a point of departure for a future summary of the ecology of Norwegian coastal waters.
