Book Description
People have relied on medicinal products derived from natural sources for millennia, and animals have long been an important part of that repertoire; nearly all cultures, from ancient times to the present, have used animals as a source of medicine. Ingredients derived from wild animals are not only widely used in traditional remedies, but are also increasingly valued as raw materials in the preparation of modern medicines. Regrettably, the unsustainable use of plants and animals in traditional medicine is recognized as a threat to wildlife conservation, as a result of which discussions concerning the links between traditional medicine and biodiversity are becoming increasingly imperative, particularly in view of the fact that folk medicine is the primary source of health care for 80% of the world’s population. This book discusses the role of animals in traditional folk medicine and its meaning for wildlife conservation. We hope to further stimulate further discussions about the use of biodiversity and its implications for wildlife conservation strategies.

Book Description
Far from being the province of magic, witchcraft, and sorcery, indigenous understanding of contagious disease in Africa and elsewhere in the developing world very often parallels western concepts of germ theory, according to the author. Labeling this 'indigenous contagion theory (ICT),' Green synthesizes the voluminous ethnographic work on tropical diseases and remedies_as well as 20 years of his own studies and interventions on sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, and traditional healers in southern Africa_to demonstrate how indigenous peoples generally conceive of contagious diseases as having naturalistic causes. His groundbreaking work suggests how western medical practitioners can incorporate ICT to better help native peoples control contagious diseases.

Book Description
From the beginning of time, Black people were given a certain way of life by the God of our ancestors. This way of life was passed on to our past ancestors for the benefit of future generations. This way of life, through a period of time, came to be known as isiko (isintu; culture), which was embodied in their lifestyle, traditions, rituals, and customs. These rituals are supposed to be practiced by families within their land. So from inception, God, the ancestors, man, culture, nature, and land were intertwined. These entities should always be in harmony with one another, and any imbalance in this relationship creates a spiritual disalignment and problems begin.

Book Description
Since 1994, South Africa has undergone a steady erosion of its indigenous built environment, with a concomitant loss of indigenous building technology and its specialised terminology. This glossary is based on the premise that readers cannot understand the culture of a people unless they have a grasp of the nuances and hidden meanings of the language. The authors bring together in one volume the terminologies that are used by southern Africa's rural builders. The terminology used by indigenous builders is included here, as well as the terminology used by subsequent colonial white settlers, including buildings of the so-called Cape Dutch, English Georgian, Victorian, and Indian Traditions. The text is set out in alphabetical order. It comprises each term in its original language, its translation where appropriate into isiZulu, and its definition in English and isiZulu. One of the strengths of English-isiZulu Glossary of Architectural Terms is its visual component of accompanying sketches that expertly illustrate the terms. This book is designed not only to assist in the teaching of architecture, but also to aid others who are interested in the field. Researchers and practitioners in disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, culture studies and building science will find it a valuable addition to their libraries. (Series: UKZN Bilingual Glossary Series) [Subject: Architecture, African Studies, Anthropology, Art History]
