Book Description
Excerpt from Hymns for the Church and Home Editor has been guided not only by the merits of the hymn, but by its subject. Many hymns have been excluded, not because they are inferior to those that were adopted, but because the subject was already sufficiently illustrated, and some, be cause, however admirable, they were not so simple as that the poor and unleamed of the congregation could make them their own. In the hymns for Family and Private Worship, this rule has not been so strictly followed, and the line between the two parts has not been so rigidly drawn but that some hymns in each will be found admissible in the other. A place has also been found here for some which, however broad and congregational in their character, yet, being translations and in unfamiliar metres, have not become rooted among us; and one or two, such as 427, would have been inserted in the first part, but that it was already in type. The hymns for Children have been separately numbered, to prevent those who use them from being puzzled by what would otherwise have been the highest figures; but they are an integral part of the book, from which they are not intended to be detached, and which necessarily includes in its other divisions hymns which children ought to know. Book Description
Excerpt from Hymn and Tune Book for the Church and the Home This book is a revised edition of the Hymn and Tune Book published by the American Unitarian Associa tion in 1868. The hymns and tunes that could best be spared are replaced by hymns and music, new and old, gathered from the ample resources supplied within the last ten years by composers and compilers of all denominations in England and America. To all whose contributions and labors have helped to enrich this book, our obligations are gratefully acknowledged. While many hymns have been restored to their original text, some slight changes, established by familiar usage, have been accepted without note. Hymns with substantial varia tions from the original are indicated by the sign 1 attached to the author's name. The collection has been made catholic and inclusive for varying moods and experiences, and for manifold phases of thought. Its aim is to present within moderate size, and with appropriate music, the best hymns in the English tongue. Book Description
Excerpt from Hymns for the Christian Church and Home Worship is an attitude which our nature assumes, not for a purpose, but from an emotion. Whenever it is genuine, it is the natural and spontaneous utterance of a mind possessed by the conception of the infinite relations in which we stand, and aspiring towards a point of new worthy of their solemnity. And though it breathes forth the deepest and greatest of desires, it is essentially an end, and not a means and, like the embrace of friendship, or the kiss of domestic affection, loses all its meaning, when adopted from conviction of its reasonableness, or 'with a view to personal advantage. Those who ask, or who would ex plain, what it is for, - whether disposed to regard it as. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Collection of Hymns, for the Christian Church and Home This Collection of Hymns has been made in compli ance with a vote of the Religious Society of which the Compiler is pastor. The Collection of his immediate pre decessor, the late learned and catholic Dr. Bentley, hav ing been used by the Society for nearly half a century, was out of print, and the books in use wellnigh worn out. That Collection, compared with later Collections, had long been felt to be deficient, not only in the number of hymns it contained, and consequently in variety of topics, but a large portion of its contents - the stiff and unpoetical versions of the Psalms by Tate and Brady was little suited to the religious exigencies and taste of the present members of the Society. Instead of a reprint of the Old Collection, to which the elder members were attached, from long use and respect to the memory of the compiler, the present pastor was requested to prepare a new orfe, that should contain such of the hymns in use as were most familiar to all, because the best, and consequently most frequently read from the pulpit. In complying with this request the Compiler has select ed, from all the various sources accessible to him, four hundred and fifteen hymns, thus exceeding by a few the number to which it was deemed expedient to restrict the Collection, independent of the Ascriptions, Subjects of Anthems, Sacred Airs, &c. Such hymns of the former' Collection are retained as were thought most worthy of a place in the new one, designated by the mark, 0. Col. The volume will be found to contain the most choice, it is believed, of the hymns in the several Collections used in our churches, together with many others equally choice, to be found in no other Collection in this country. Book Description
Excerpt from Hymn and Tune Book for the Church and the Home: And Services for Congregational Worship IN the preparation of this book, the selections from the Psalms and Prophets are taken from the Common Version, with a few verbal changes, chiefly from the trans lation by Rev. Dr. Noyes. The rest of the materials are drawn from ancient liturgies and many modern service books, to all of which obligations are acknowledged. Its plan avoids the monotony of a Single prolonged service; and by its threefold division of Introduction, Psalm, and Prayer, it offers freedom in using more or less, at the option of the minister and people. Book Description
Excerpt from Church and Home Metrical Psalter and Hymnal The book is for Church and Home use. The hymns have not, however, been separated on this account, as clergymen differ so much in the choice of hymns for public worship. That which one might regard as applicable only to the retirement of the closet, another might select as suitable to the subject of his sermon, or to the special circumstances of his congregation at a particular time. There will be no real difficulty in distinguishing, after consulting the Index of Subjects. From this it will be seen that they embrace every condition of humanity, and every variety of Christian experience. The Editor believes that they will be found to be in harmony with the teaching of Holy Scripture and the Articles of the Church. A collection of nearly six hundred psalms and hymns may surely be regarded as sufficient for every purpose. Some may deem it too long; but this is a fault (if it be one), on the right side, as it affords ample range, while the size is not inconvenient, nor the price high. Book Description
Excerpt from The Baptist Hymnal: For Use in the Church and Home The design Of those concerned in the preparation Of the baptist hymnal, has been to furnish the churches a book which shall aid in the worship of God, and so make the service Of His house more attractive and delightful. They have sought both in the selection Of Hymns, and in the choice and adaptation of music, to secure to God's people the best possible expression Of the praises, pleadings, and aspirations Of their hearts. By restricting the number of hymns to those which are believed to be all that are necessary, space has been found for a most liberal provision in music. A definite plan has controlled the selection, viz. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
