A less fatiguing route is by the High Street and road to a little beyond All Saints' Church, where the path to the right leads up to two white houses (one with an octagonal tower) known as Belmont. Keeping to the south of these, we take a road leading to the eastward, and continue along it. After passing through two or three gates, we arrive at the Fish Ponds Farm. The previous occupant of this place was accustomed to provide the necessaries for tea parties, &c., and it was then a very favourite resort; but the present tenant does not find it to his purpose to give the same facilities. This farm, therefore, we pass, and through two or three more fields, to Fairlight Place, where we turn through a gate to the right hand, which leads at once to Fairlight Glen. Through the Glen, keeping to the left, is the way to Lover's Seat, somewhat difficult to find without the aid of a guide; but should one not offer, we may venture to direct the visitor to it as immediately below the highest point of the cliff, and reached by some rude steps, more worn than cut, round the eastern declivity. Several inaccuracies having arisen in the versions of the affair which gave the name to this place, we give the true one: --An attachment existing between Mr. Charles L, of Rye, and Miss B, which was discountenanced by the friends of the latter, they, to render assurance doubly sure, removed her to the house of a friend on the site of the present Fairlight Place--an unfortunate arrangement for their purpose, but most welcome to the lovers; for the gentleman, having command of a revenue cutter, and learning (as who in such a position would take long to do?) the retreat...
