The Alabama 36th Infantry Regiment was organized at Mount Vernon, Alabama, in May, 1862, with men from Mobile, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Fayette, Sumter, and Monroe counties. The unit was involved in constructing the defenses at Oven and Choctaw Bluffs, then was stationed at Mobile until April, 1863. Assigned to General Clayton's and later Holtzclaw's Brigade, it participated in difficult campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville. Transferred to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, it continued the fight at Spanish Fort. It was included in the surrender on May 4, 1865.At the Battle of Chickamauga it was reported that the regiment had 28 officers, 429 men, and 401 guns on September 19; and 20 officers, 338 men, and 316 guns on September 20. It sustained 147 casualties at Chattanooga, and mustered a force of 353 effectives in December, 1863, and about 300 in November, 1864. The Georgia 36th Infantry Regiment (Glenn's) was formed at Dalton, Ga. during the winter of 1861-62. " There was a second "36th known as Villipiques which became the 1st Confederate Infantry Regiment. Glenn's 36th served first in Tennessee, then in Mississippi where it was a part of T. H. Taylor's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The regiment was engaged in the battle of Champion Hill (Baker's Creek), Miss. May 16, 1863, and in the bombardment of Vicksburg, Miss. from May 18 to July 4, 1863. where it surrendered. After being exchanged, the regiment was brigaded under General Cummings and fought with the Army of Tennessee from Chattanooga to Nashville, Georgia, and the Carolina's Campaign. In January, 1865, it was consolidated with the 56th Georgia Regiment. As originally organized, the regiment had 930 men. It suffered 43 casualties at Chattanooga, and reported 267 men and 213 arms in December of 1863. In April 1865 the 36th Regiment was consolidated with the 42nd and parts of 34th and 66th regiments Ga. Vol. Inf. and formed a part of the army under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston in North Carolina. When it consolidated, 232 men were present for duty. Only a handful of men surrendered on April 26, 1865. While not specifically about this regiment, "A History of the 42nd Regiment" by Capt. W. L. Calhoun gives us a close first hand account for the 36th. The Alabama 38th Infantry Regiment was organized at Mobile in May 1862, and remained at the defenses in the vicinity of that city till February 1863. It then proceeded to Tullahoma, and was there placed in the brigade of Gen. Clayton of Barbour, with the Eighteenth, Thirty-sixth, and Fifty-eighth of Alabama regiments. The regiment was first under fire with slight loss at Hoover's Gap, and lost nearly half the regiment killed and wounded at Chickamauga. At Missionary Ridge the Thirty-eighth was again hotly engaged at close quarters, and a large number were captured. It wintered at Dalton, and bore its share in the operations of the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, losing severely, particularly at Resaca and Atlanta. From Marietta to the close, Gen. Holtzclaw of Montgomery commanded the brigade. It fought around the latter city, and at Jonesboro. During the Tennessee campaign of Gen. Hood, the regiment felt the blight of the December frost at Nashville, and was in the rear of the retreat. Placed in the defenses at Mobile, the regiment went through the fiery ordeal at Spanish Fort, where it again suffered severely. With the army, it was surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, about 80 strong.

The Alabama 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Pensacola, 18 May 1861, with 8 infantry and 2 mounted companies. It remained on duty there until November. The regiment was ordered to Chattanooga in November, and then a month later, was sent to Bowling Green. The remainder of Gen. Bragg's forces were ordered out of Florida on 27 FEB 1862. Gen. Bragg joined up with Gen. Beauregard's forces in Jackson, Tennessee. The 7th was in a temporary brigade under Col. S. A. M. Wood, and it was included in the Army of Tennessee around Corinth. The time of service of most of the companies expired after 12 months during the first week in April, 1862, and the regiment disbanded. However, the two mounted companies from Autauga and Lauderdale retained their organization and fought at Shiloh, as did other men from the regiment. The mounted companies became part of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry following Shiloh and the majority of the remaining men and officers joined other organizations. The 35th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Lagrange, 12 March 1862, with about 750 men. Ordered to Corinth, it was there brigaded under General John C. Breckinridge. It then went to Louisiana and took part in the attack on Baton Rouge, losing 4 killed and 21 wounded. It was part of the force with which General Earl Van Dorn assaulted Corinth; casualties were heavy. Placed under General James Buford, the regiment was under fire at the first bombardment of Port Hudson. It passed some time in that vicinity, and in May 1863, the regiment was engaged at Baker's Creek with light loss. The 35th participated in the Atlanta Campaign where it lost 65 killed and wounded on 22 July at Atlanta, and 27 killed and wounded on the 28th. The regiment moved into Tennessee with General John Bell Hood and was in the advance in the attack on the outpost at Decatur, where it lost 35 killed and wounded. At the Battle of Franklin, the 35th lost 150 killed and wounded, one half of its effective force. The loss at Nashville was light, and the remnant of the regiment proceeded eastward to renew their struggle in the Carolinas. The 31st Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Talladega, 16 March 1862, with men from Calhoun, Cherokee, Montgomery, Randolph, Shelby, and Talladega counties. It reported to General Danville Leadbetter at Chattanooga shortly after. It then moved up to Knoxville, where it was brigaded under General Seth Barton, in Carter Stevenson's Division. After the Kentucky Campaign, the 31st was permanently brigaded with the 20th, 23rd, 30th, and 46th Alabama regiments, under General Edward D. Tracy of Madison, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. In December, the 31st accompanied Stevenson's Division to Vicksburg. There were 260 effectives in January, 1863, with 21 killed and 37 wounded at Vicksburg. Following parole at Vicksburg, the 31st continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee. There were 23 casualties at Chattanooga, and in December, 1863, there were 452 present with 323 arms. Only 180 were fit for duty in January 1865, and less than 100 surrendered in April. Toward the close of the war, the 31st was consolidated with the 23rd and 46th Infantry and redesignated the 23rd Consolidated Infantry Regiment at Smithfield, 9 April 1865.
