The Bureau of Labor Statistics Seasonal Factor Method
Author: Abe Rothman
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Government publications
Languages : en
Pages : 40
Book Description
The BLS method for deriving seasonal factors for economic time. The series was developed at the end of 1959 and introduced early in 1960. The primary goal of the BLS method is (a) the generation of reliable seasonal factors, (b) the control, within acceptable limits, of changes in the factors when a series is updated and new factors are recalculated. Since 1960, the BLS method has been the official method for seasonally adjusting labor force, employment, and price series. More than 2,100 series have been processed by BLS for its own use or for use by other government agencies. The Bureau's continued activities in this area have resulted in changes and improvements in the method and in its computer applications. This paper describes these changes and also presents some of the research activities carried out by the Bureau in the general area of seasonal factor methodology.
