By selectively choosing the appropriate heavy ion transfer reaction one can access high spin states. As a demonstration of the technique two proton and two neutron states of high spin (both yrast and non-yrast) in Nd nuclei have been identified. Analytical expression for neutron transfer in low energy heavy ion collisions are derived within the limitations of the semi-classical method. An exact neutron transfer amplitute is derived for harmonic oscillator bound states. An approximate transfer amplitude obtained using Woods-Saxon bound states is shown to lead to excellent agreement with numerical calculations. [Author's abstract].
