Book Description
Excerpt from Heaven on Earth and Other Poems In 1919 a small edition of my book, Heaven on Earth and Other Poems appeared. Since its publication I have written several poems and also made slight corrections in a few of my poems formerly published. This Second Edition Enlarged contains sixty - five of my poems and two of my prose sketches, divided into Later and Early Poems. I have had an aim and a purpose in writing poetry and prose. I wrote Heaven on Earth, Greetings From Puget Sound, The Soul of the Poet, The Blooms of Deschi, and others, for the purpose of instilling into the human soul a love for the beautiful, grand and sublime. I wrote Emblem of Freedom and Spirit of Liberty to show that a citizen of this country must be true at heart to be an American - native born or adopted. Men and women must be brave, pure and loyal. I wrote King Bacchus, The Crimson Cup, Reflections of Pete La boe, and others, to reveal evil and wrong. We have to show up and break up evil and wrong to permit the ihflowing and infilling of sunshine. I wrote Uncle Sam in Prophecy about three months before the signing of the armistice with Germany. The purpose of this poem is to show the great work that the United States has been doing and will be doing for the good of the world. In brief, all of my poems and prose sketches have an aim and a purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Heavens and Earth: A Book of Poems The centaurs awoke! They aroused from their beds of pine, Their long flanks hoary with dew, and their eyes, deep-drowned In the primal slumber of stones, stirred bright to the shine! And they stamped with their hooves and their gallop abased the ground! Swifter than arrowy birds in an eager sky, White-browed kings of the hills where old Titans feast, Cheiron ordered the charge with a neighing cry. Book Description
Excerpt from A Dream of Heaven: And Other Poems On which a city stood, so grand It shed a glory o'er the land For miles and miles around. My sight Was almost blinded by its light; Its walls with precious stones ablaze, More brilliant than the sun's clear rays. What are those palaces? I cried. Eternal mansions, said my guide, Prepared for those who turn aside From all earth's follies, lust, and pride. But how shall my weak pen portray The glory which around me lay? Eye hath not seen, nor ear hath heard, Is written in the holy word, Nor mortal heart can e'er conceive The joys for those who still believe; Though for a time the veil is drawn Before their eyes, the radiant morn Awaits their waking. Glorified and free, Mortal shall put on immortality. I watched the people as they passed Before me in that city vast; And on each brow there seemed to shine Unearthly radiance divine. Book Description
Excerpt from An Epic of Heaven: And Other Poems Adirondack Readings. Prologue. It was the time of year when flowers were blown, When grass and small fruit were to ripeness grown; When farmers had just taken in the hay, And golden wheat, for store or market day, That on a road that entered the North Woods, Through travel had been stopped by Nature's floods Having in tumult washed away the piers Of rugged stone, which stood so firm for years, Taking its wooden road-bed down the stream, Dashing, like jumping fish, each board and beam - To take the journey where the Hudson roams Its shining foot-steps by a million homes. Here, at this stream, the stage-coach halting came; The passengers at first desired to blame, While not a few with somewhat crossness spoke, Who afterwards enjoyed it as a joke. And, as the stream could not be bridged just then, Some time for hewing timber, getting men, Causing a delay of at least two days, The pushing driver turned about his bays, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Last Days of Jesus and Other Poems The Advent. Melodious at creation's birth The stars together sang; But sweeter far through heaven and earth Redemption's anthem rang. I THE summer sun has left a bright farewell, But growing shadows hang o'er yonder steep: A gentle stillness seems around to dwell, Soft and ambrosial as an infant's sleep; Yet, brooding o'er the whole, a spirit deep, As if the air had thought. Yon river clear, And those blue skies, a quiet sabbath keep: Surely some pitying seraph hovers near, For love, pure, peaceful, tender love is here. II But there is one alone, and, kneeling there Amidst the kindred stillness of the place, The voice, the youthful voice is poured in prayer, And light and tears are mingling in her face, The broken spirit, and the answering grace, - The hidden sweetness, and the Spirit's love, O'er that celestial countenance we trace, - Pure, harmless, chaste, as an unfledged dove, And inwardly absorbed in One above. I. Hear: "Vanity of vanities"; but I: Have profit in thy labors all thy days, And tho' the generations pass, the lays Of well-spent hours shall sing to thee. The sky Shall hold the glorious sun. The winds shall dry The earth, go to the torrid south: the blaze Of suns shall blind; but have a heart and Mays Will be as lilting birds that once did fly. For in these days we need the largest hope, Since Doubt is mountainous in all our lives; Many today in horrid darkness grope; But I: As bees about their honeyed hives Let joys flock round thy hearts.
