La figura degli agenti a Roma per promuovere casi presso la Sede Apostolica è apparsa finora solo in pubblicazioni relative alla prima età moderna e moderna. Grazie ad esse sappiamo che rappresentavano gli interessi di diverse entità ecclesiastiche: diocesi, capitoli cattedrali, monasteri, priorati, chierici. Inoltre rispondevano agli interessi dei loro sovrani e trasmettevano a questi, come agli ecclesiastici di cui sopra, notizie dal centro della cristianità. Alcuni risiedevano stabilmente a Roma, altri vi rimanevano fino al compimento dell’incarico assegnatogli. Armati solitamente di una buona conoscenza del diritto canonico e di una certa fluenza in latino e italiano, nonché di ottime capacità retoriche, dovevano far passare il caso affidatogli attraverso il labirinto della burocrazia papale. Come è cambiato questo ruolo nel XVIII-XX secolo? Gli agenti hanno allora continuato ad avere una funzione cruciale nei rapporti con la Curia Romana, rappresentando gli interessi di comunità e personalità ecclesiastiche e raccogliendo informazioni per queste e per il proprio Stato, oppure il loro lavoro è diventato del tutto invisibile, ripetitivo e amministrativo? Hanno continuato a risiedere nella Città eterna oppure hanno agito da e in altre città pontificie. Inoltre l’attività romana o italiana è stata solo un episodio della loro biografia oppure hanno svolto regolarmente questa funzione, trasformandola in un vero e proprio lavoro trasmesso in famiglia per più generazioni? Qualcuno di loro è riuscito a costruirsi una carriera in patria o a Roma e ha utilizzato a tal scopo la rete di relazioni forgiate come agente? In recent generations, the study of dynastic politics and diplomatic history has undergone a revival. This field provides invaluable context for understanding international relations and focuses on aspects of cultural exchange and intellectual currents far more than previously. The “age of Louis XIV” has not been immune from this resurrection of interest in foreign policy and the conduct of diplomacy. This book is the first serious full-length study of Louis XIV’s diplomatic relations with the small states of northern Italy, specifically the duchies of Parma, Modena, and Mantua-Monferrato. Louis’s desire to be seen as a peacemaker (despite his obvious bellicosity) extended to Italy, where he asserted the French crown’s potential as a broker of peace between rival dynasties. But his evident self-interest, and the need to preserve France’s perceived traditional alliance with the House of Savoy, undermined these efforts. He also failed to defend the interests of the dukes of Parma and Modena in their quarrels with the Holy See. After apparent successes in the Franco-Dutch War, Louis believed that he could undermine Spanish influence over the princes of Italy. But his attempts to do so antagonised both the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs and the Lombardy dukes themselves, resulting in renewed war. Louis XIV and the Peace of Europe analyses diplomatic culture at Versailles and at the small Italian courts, and assesses examples of artistic exchange. It will be valuable reading for undergraduates, graduate students, and historians of the field, as well as for those interested in Louis XIV and Italian culture more generally.

This is the untold story of the men who fed, dressed, protected and advised the cardinals and great nobles of Baroque Rome. Against the background of demographic crisis and a Europe gripped by plague, war and famine, the papal capital lured ambitious gentlemen and hungry commoners to work in service. Mirroring a city where men far outnumbered women, elite households provided jobs for thousands of male immigrants from all over Italy and beyond. Footmen, secretaries, stable boys, cooks and accountants composed an all-male world that fit awkwardly within the paradigm of early modern patriarchy. A gender ideology dependent on the idea that men were innately superior to women had to navigate a society without women and justify the subordination of most men to the few. Rigid domestic hierarchies imposed by employers and implemented by gentlemen servants yielded only the barest subsistence to the robust but unskilled majority. The vagaries of the patron-client relationship doomed even the gentlemen to insecurity. In this context the streets, churches and squares of Rome offered richer, if sometimes dangerous, opportunities than the palaces to enjoy masculine privilege and the experience of egalitarian fraternity. This book mobilizes census records, trials, family account books and household manuals to show both the contradictions and the tenacity of patriarchy in a city of men.
