Book Description
Excerpt from General Todleben's History of the Defence of Sebastopol, 1854-5: A Review As the extraordinary number, size, and consequent costliness of the maps with which General de Todleben's History of the Defence of Sebastopol is accompanied, interpose considerable difficulty in the way of producing the work in English, I have been requested to republish the account of the book which appeared in "The Times." By the permission of the proprietors I now do so. In order to complete the description of the battles of the Alma, of Balaklava, and of Inkerman, and of the principal events treated of in the first volume, I have added some extracts from the Russian narrative, which would have swelled the Review far beyond the limits of even the columns of "The Times." Book Description
By the late 19th century Odessa was the most polyglot and cosmopolitan city in the empire. In the first decades of the 20th century, however, strikes, revolutionary agitation, and pogroms brought on the city's decline. Herlihy contrasts Odessa's rapid development in the 19th century with the growing tension in its society up to the First World War.
