Book Description
Excerpt from Gas and Petroleum Engines The suitability Of oil engines for the purpose has awakened a widespread interest in them. The Editor therefore hopes that this little volume will be especially welcome to non-technical readers who like to keep ahead Of the times in matters Of such universal importance. One chapter deals exclusively with the theory of the gas engine, but the non-technical mind Should have no fear, for mathematics have been as far as possible avoided. It may also serve to dispel wrongful notions concerning the practical limits of the efficiency of gas engines which. Book Description
Excerpt from Gas and Petroleum Engines: A Practical Treatise on the Internal Combustion Engine This book is intended to aid students and practical men in studying Gas and Petroleum Engines, and the principles that underlie and control their action, so as to put the practical 'man in a position to test the performance of these engines, and to make an intelligent use of his own experience and observations. Several years' experience in the teaching of technical students and practical workmen has led me to bring out this work, which I have endeavoured to make complete in itself as a text-book on the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gas and Oil Engine In this edition special attention has been paid to the oil engine, in view of its rapid rate of present development and the probability of its very extensive use for many new purposes, such as motor cars. Many engineers are now paying attention to the oil engine, to whom the subject is unfamiliar and in the hope of proving useful to such new men on the work, the author has gone caref'ully into the discussion of the chemical nature of petroleum and the different methods of vaporising heavy oils. Book Description
Excerpt from Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines And this is equally true whether you are a man or a woman, a boy or a girl, for it is only a question of time until you will find yourself face to face With one of them. If you are ignorant of how they are made and work you will, more than likely, go through the harrowing experiences and make the costly mis takes that countless others have made before you. This is a great pity, for it is easy to know all about gas, gasoline and oil engines if you start right, and to do so all you need is to read this book through carefully. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Vol. 2 The first volume of the new edition of this work was published in 1909, so that three years have been spent in the preparation of the present volume, which deals with practical problems of design, con struction and operation of Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engines. The author has been fortunate in securing the co-operation of Mr. G. A. Burls, in collecting information and writing the book. Chapters I, II, V and XII are by the author Chapters VII, VIII, IX and XI are by Mr. Burls while Chapters III, IV, VI and X are in great part the work of Mr. Burls. The whole work, however, has been the subject of joint discussion, and the book as it now stands correctly represents the opinions of both writers. The aim throughout all the chapters has been the comparison of early and late constructions and the discussion of various problems which have appeared in the course of the development of the various types of engine since the introduction of the Otto cycle in 1876. Chapters I and II deal broadly with the development of four and two-stroke engines, and describe various difficulties which have been encountered and partially overcome; results of operation are given and various tests are dealt with both in the works and in practical Operation in factories. Chapter III deals with igniting arrangements, and describes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods used, tracing the development which has demonstrated the supremacy of electrical ignition in its best forms. Chapter IV describes governors and governing methods as practised on the Continent and in England and America. Book Description
Excerpt from Gas and Petroleum Engines, Vol. 1: A Manual for Students and Engineers The success of the first edition has encouraged me to o prepare this new book with the original aim to aid engineer ing students and engineers in studying Gas and Petroleum Engines, and the principles that. Underlie and control their action, so as to put the practical man in a position to test the performance of these engines, and to make an intelligent use of his own observations. Experience in teaching engineering students has led me to endeavour, by a simple, detailed treat ment, to make the work useful as a text-book on the subject. Brief historical notes trace the evolution of the internal combustion engine from the crude gunpowder engine to modern gas and oil engines. The main features and details of the chief types of motors established in common use are shown by many illustrations, with description of the action and trials of each engine. A special chapter has been added on petroleum - oil and spirit - engines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Cycles of Gas and Oil Engines The words internal combustion engines contain a fairly approximate descriptive definition of gas, oil, and Spirit engines 3 and for the later period of these motors - for the whole may be conveniently divided into two periods, that before and that subsequent to the introduction of the Otto engines - this title is possibly the best that can be devised, yet as these words will necessarily include gunpowder, gun-cotton, and all similar fulminating engines, it is not sufficiently accurate for a work upon the cycles of these motors. Book Description
Excerpt from Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines: Including Complete Gas Engine Glossary AS the soot and monoxide have a calorific value it is evident that much of the heat Of the fuel is wasted if they are exhausted from the cylinder without further burning at the end of the stroke. To gain every possible heat unit it is necessary to fur: nish sufficient oxygen or air to reduce the fuel to its lowest state. As the free oxygen and nitrogen contained in the fuel are without fuel value, their rejection from the cylinder oc casions no loss except for that heat which they take from the cylinder by virtue Of their high temperature.
