Book Description
The annihilations of free electrons and positrons and of positronium are discussed and cross sections are given. Positronium formation under astrophysical conditions is then discussed. A general formula is then derived that gives the gamma-ray spectrum from the annihilation of cosmic-ray positions in terms of the positron source spectrum, energy loss rate, and annihilation cross section gives as functions of energy. The gamma-ray spectrum from the annihilation of thermal positions is calculated, and the gamma-ray intensity from secondary positrons is determined.

Book Description
Gamma ray astronomy, the branch of high energy astrophysics that studies the sky in energetic ?-ray photons, is destined to play a crucial role in the exploration of nonthermal phenomena in the Universe in their most extreme and violent forms. The great potential of this discipline offers impressive coverage of many OC hot topicsOCO of modern astrophysics and cosmology, such as the origin of galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays, particle acceleration and radiation processes under extreme astrophysical conditions, and the search for dark matter."

Book Description
"The scientific potential of y-ray astronomy has long been recognized from a theoretical standpoint by investigators in the fields of cosmic-ray research and high-energy astrophysics. Gamma-ray studies can help answer questions concerning the nature and origin of cosmic rays, both galactic and extragalactic : the nature of supernovae, pulsars, and powerful radio sources; the extent and importance of antimatter in the universe; and the nature of the universe in the distant past. The advent of satellite-borne y-ray telescopes has recently made y-ray astronomy a reality. The first observations, as discussed in this book, have already provided important information on galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays and interstellar gas. These observations may also have great cosmological significance. The second generation of y-ray telescopes is already in the development stage. It therefore seems most appropriate at this time for a comprehensive theoretical monograph."--Page iii.

Book Description
Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis is written by experts in the measurement of radioactivity. The book describes the broad scope of analytical methods available and instructs the reader on how to select the proper technique. It is intended as a practical manual for research which requires the accurate measurement of radioactivity at all levels, from the low levels encountered in the environment to the high levels measured in radioisotope research. This book contains sample preparation procedures, recommendations on steps to follow, necessary calculations, computer controlled analysis, and high sample throughput techniques. Each chapter includes practical techniques for application to nuclear safety, nuclear safeguards, environmental analysis, weapons disarmament, and assays required for research in biomedicine and agriculture. The fundamentals of radioactivity properties, radionuclide decay, and methods of detection are included to provide the basis for a thorough understanding of the analytical procedures described in the book. Therefore, the Handbook can also be used as a teaching text. - Includes sample preparation techniques for matrices such as soil, air, plant, water, animal tissue, and surface swipes - Provides procedures and guidelines for the analysis of commonly encountered na
