Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-Fifth Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1912 The Maryland State Teachers' Association has evidently entered upon a more prosperous era and occupies higher ground in our educational system than ever before in its history. The forty-fifth annual session held last summer at Braddock Heights was remarkable in its attendance and the quality of its program. The goal of a membership of one thousand was almost reached - over nine hundred enrolling. The same zeal which has been put into the preceding meetings by the officers of the Association and the members of the executive committee, if maintained, will easily secure the one thousand enrollment which all of us have devoutly wished for and striven to obtain. To have had as speakers at the meeting such distinguished educators as Dr. P. P. Claxton, United States Commissioner of Education and Superintendent Dr. W. M. Davidson, of the Washington City Schools, speaks well for those who arranged the program and shows that the Association is growing in importance. The work of the several departments of the Association improves each year in its character and its scope becomes more far reaching. May it be the purpose of every teacher and official to make whatever sacrifice is necessary to at least double the membership and bring to the program the best talent obtainable. Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-Sixth Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1940 There has been more than a traditional respect for the idea that unless the meeting of the Maryland State Teachers' Association be held at some resort-place the enrollment would be a failure. It can be said to the credit of the Association that the spirit which dominates its membership is of such an order as to put to flight any such false notions. The Annapolis meeting is a complete answer to the oft repeated charge that teachers attend this annual gathering primarily for pleasure, and because of an opportunity to spend a few days at the seaside or in some mountain resort. It is now plain the real motive is educational or professional. Teachers, first of all, want to keep in touch with questions which affect their work; they want the inspiration and encouragement which come from participation in the program or listening to the expressed ideas of those whose opportunities have been better than theirs and they appreciate an interchange of views on matters of common interest. Annapolis, the capital of our State, could not make its appeal to our school people that it is a pleasure resort, but barring one or two meetings, the enrollment this year (nearly eight hundred) is as good as we have ever had. Me have every reason to feel proud of the results of our last meeting. A city of ten thousand inhabitants made preparation for the meeting, and in this way there was a public interest in and appreciation for our program which it is not possible to obtain in the customary meeting place. There are good reasons to believe that the public school idea will have a better hold on that community and its march toward the goal of the highest efficiency possible for public school work will be less hindered than would result had it not enjoyed such a privilege. Apart from any consideration of the benefits which resulted to the community, our attending forces lived four days in our historic capital. To see the old colonial structures, buildings full of historic interest, the State's oldest college, the new Naval Academy, and to be entertained by the Governor of the State in the Executive Mansion was well worth the visit not to mention the controlling purpose in attending. Nothing but praise for the Executive Committee which made possible Annapolis for the meeting place and for the good people of our Capital City for their remarkable interest and hospitality! Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-Third Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Teachers Association, 1910 We have reached another mile post in the history of the Maryland State Teachers' Association. A retrospect may not be encouraging, if we consider numbers as the only element of growth. It does appear that the Association is not as large, numerically, as it was a year ago; but let us hope that, in all the other essential elements of growth, there has been steady advancement. The only two places which are considered resorts, where there are abundant hotel facilities - Mountain Lake Park and Ocean City - are located in remote corners of the State. The mountain resort is in Garrett County, about three thousand feet above sea level, and it makes a long and somewhat expensive trip for the great majority who attend; Ocean City, in Worcester County, is Maryland's most famous resort; and it, too, is difficult to reach. Last year at Mountain Lake, the enrollment of members was unprecedented, and the question of defraying the expenses of the meeting was an easy problem to solve. It is a matter worthy of note that Garrett County, in whose territory the Mountain Lake Park meeting was held, furnished more than one hundred of the members at that meeting. Worcester County did not do so well at Ocean City the present year, and we must all feel more or less disappointment, when we see an enrollment of about four hundred at the last meeting of the Association. Inasmuch as benefits of a substantial character result to any town or county where the Association meets, would it not be well for the Executive Committee to ask a guarantee of membership fees, when invitations come for the Association to hold its next meeting at a particular place? The attitude of teachers toward this agency of our school system is not right, so long as the enrollment of members in the Association is less than ten percent, of the number of teachers in actual employment. Under the circumstances, these questions naturally arise, and should be carefully considered before the next meeting, viz: I. Is the time when we are accustomed to hold the meeting - the last week in June - the most favorable? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
