Book Description
Excerpt from Forest Friends Stories At the edge of the stream the beavers made their house. They used the same kinds of materials they had used in the dam. In their house the beavers lived safe and warm during the winter. Spring came and brought the rains. Day after day it rained, and the water in the stream rose higher and higher. It pressed against the dam with great force. It seemed about to carry the dam away. One day Grandfather Beaver went out to inspect the dam. He saw that it was in danger from the flooding waters. Suddenly he slapped his flat tail on the water to call the other beavers. Every one came out to Grandfather Beaver. Very soon they were all busily at work cutting holes in the dam they had worked so hard to build. They dug through the mud and cut the interlaced branches with their sharp teeth. Hour after hour they worked without resting. At last the water poured through the openings and ran rushing down the stream. The dam did not wash away. Like the good engineers they were, the beavers watched the level of the stream. When danger from the flood was over, they started to work again. Soon all the openings were mended; the dam was as good as new. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Forestry in the South It is inconceivable that this complex scheme of things we have evolved in building up a new nation should continue in its present paths without the varied and necessary products of the forest. We have come to take these forest products for granted, like water, sun shine and air. Yet in the face of all this, we know that wood is daily becoming more scarce. Book Description
Excerpt from The School Book of Forestry Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lum bering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wildlife. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expandour timber lands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations. Book Description
Excerpt from Flowers of the Field and Forest: From Original Water-Color Drawings After Nature Nature also is an artist and an author. She paints the flowers before we copy them, and writes their simple story for us to tell again. We have put upon the first page of our book a charming flower, which she also displays upon the opening leaves of the great floral book of the year. The story of its modest life is not a long or a startling one, but perhaps it has a cheery word of hope, which weary, wintry hearts, longing for spring, may be glad to hear.
