Excerpt from Fishways in the Inland Waters of British Columbia The effect of this Obstruction during 1913-14 will not be fully known until after the runs of 1917-18, but it appears safe to predict that the results will be found to be of a very serious character.* Sufficient has now been said to prove the great importance of providing satisfactory ingress and egress for the salmon. At the present time the salmon that escape capture on the fishing grounds have, save for natural obstructions, such as are caused by falls too steep to be surmounted, an unobstructed passage-way from the sea to the remotest sections of the water-sheds of the large streams; there are, moreover, practically no canals diverting from the main channels. It-is absolutely essential for the life of the salmon industry in British Columbia that adequate and practically workable provisions be made and maintained for the Safeguarding of the salmon - both adult and young - ih connection with the granting of any rights or privileges for the damming of streams, for the diversion of water for power, irrigation, or other activities involving the use of the inland waters. Lake and Reservoir Restoration deals with the eutrophication process and the methods to protect, restore, and manage lakes and reservoirs. The most common in-lake techniques or procedures, plus nutrient diversion, are reviewed with regard to their scientific basis, methods of application, known effectiveness, feasibility, drawbacks, and costs. The U.S. Ocean Commission Report identified the need for regional ecosystem assessments to support coastal and ocean management. These assessments must provide greater understanding of physical and biological dynamics than assessments at global and national scales can provide but transcend state and local interests. This need and timeliness is apparent for Long Island Sound, where a multi-state regional restoration program is underway for America’s most urbanized estuary. Synthesis of the Long Island Sound ecosystem is needed to integrate knowledge across disciplines and provide insight into understanding and managing pressing issues, such as non-point sources of pollution, coastal development, global climatic change, and invasive species. Currently, there is a need for a comprehensive volume that summarizes the ecological and environmental dynamics and status of Long Island Sound and its myriad ecosystems. It has been 30 years since a comprehensive summary of Long Island Sound was prepared and 50 years since the pioneering work of Gordon Riley. Major advances in estuarine science are providing new insights into these systems, and yet, the condition of many estuaries is in decline in the face of continuing coastal development. There is an opportunity to lay a foundation for integrative coastal observing systems that truly provide the foundation for improved decision-making.
