Book Description
After his release from the Green Bay Packers, realizing that his football career was abruptly over, Delvin Williams asked himself some hard questions: What happened to the game he fell in love with as a kid? What is a retired football player supposed to do? Where did he fit in? Nothing had prepared him for life after football. From his childhood in inner-city Houston and school days at all-Black Kashmere High School, Williams tells the story of a young boy who realized that football filled some of the empty places in his spirit left by an absent father, a poverty-stricken childhood, and the ongoing sting of racism. His determination carried him through a four-year degree at the University of Kansas and, ultimately, an All-Pro career with the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins. Football afforded him an education and a good living. But it also had an impact on his body and soul beyond anything he could have imagined. In Fifth Ward to Fourth Quarter: Football’s Impact on an NFL Player’s Body and Soul, Delvin Williams brings readers on the long journey from Houston’s Fifth Ward to the packed stadiums of the NFL, continuing with his decades-long fight for the compensation due an athlete who sustained injuries on the job. Here, Williams recounts the circumstances that motivated him to meet challenges at every level, exceeding his own expectations, telling the story of a career that produced a head-on collision between a starry-eyed kid from the tough streets of Houston and the industry of football.

Presidential Sheet Music
Author: Danny O. Crew
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 824
Book Description
Political historians have traditionally interpreted the people and events of each presidential era by studying books, periodicals, letters, diaries and speeches. One source of printed material that has not received much scholarly attention is published music, much of which has been all but lost in the archives of libraries and museums. The traditional librarianly cataloguing of music has ignored important aspects such as lyrical content and cover art, making it impossible to comprehensively locate and study items by subject matter. Presidential Sheet Music presents an exhaustive listing of presidential-related music in all printed forms, and provides information on each piece. Thus may we expand our understanding of political communication and discourse throughout American history. A sizable Introduction discusses matters from the publication in 1768 of The Liberty Song (which formally made music an instrument of political expression in America) to the few 1980s and 1990s presidential songs and marches. There are also helpful appendices which list music by titles, composers, publishers, and candidates.

Coming Full Circle
Author: Ralph E. Gipson
Publisher: Tate Publishing
ISBN: 161739744X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
Ralph Gipson knows what it means to come full circle. Born into a culture of hatred and disenfranchisement, Ralph's life took him to the depths of racism, sexism, agnosticism, drug abuse, violence, and sexual promiscuity. Coming Full Circle follows Ralph on his tumultuous quest to achieve a life of freedom and love. He discovers firsthand the falseness of the stereotypes he grew up believing when he joins the army, travels abroad, and sees a world without the racial divisions he knows back home. Ralph's views of himself and his race grow even more complex when his son and daughter are born. Despite his unhappy marriage, he refuses to leave his children and become just another stereotype. Determined to be a role model for his children, he chooses instead to be an outspoken writer and speaker on issues of parenthood in the black community. Eventually, Ralph hears the call to ministry and endures homelessness and poverty to enter the seminary. But even in the church, Ralph finds that many only see a person's color. Coming Full Circle is a call to action for all Americans, of all races, to realize the vision of the civil rights leaders of the 1950s and '60s and become the 'beloved community' Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of.
