Book Description
Excerpt from The Etude, Vol. 26: October, 1908 When the pupil starts in his year's work, it should be with the resolve to devote himself to each mi untest detail. If the teacher sees fit to spend a term to Czerny or Cramer, then accept your task with all your heart, not complaining about the dryness of the text, but happy in the thought that Czerny and Cramer will lead to Beethoven. Do not content yourself with whatever extent the teacher may eu lighten you, but delve into the remotest depths of your Musical History, Theory and Harmony, so that you will know something more than the mere playing of scales, and musical education requires breadth of treatment. Book Description
Excerpt from School of Etudes for the Pianist, Vol. 1 of 3: A Selection of Standard Etudes in All Styles Progressively Arranged; Lower Elementary Grade As the real study of carefully selected tudes is so decidedly beneficial, and as the playing of tudes totally unfit for the purpose, or the practise of exercises in general without plan or aim meets with so little success, I have been moved to compile a collection of standard tudes of real value and utility to the art of pianoforte-playing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Etudes of Life It was with him as with all geniuses, the best came to him after a period of despair and, for the rest, mere love of praise or a passing desire for amu ence never warped his soul or marred his manhood, though he had vagrant moods. When well - earned appreciation came to him from other lands, he bowed his head and thanked God that at last they were beginning to love and honor his work, and he hastened again among the trees, for there in the soft stillness, with the crooning of the pines and the sweet notes of birds about him, his soul was filled with ecstasy. A wild rose, a water lily, a bit of heather, seemed to speak to him of God and His handiwork. He did not pray as many other men pray. He simply wrote down impres sions, and these bore their own stamp of spirituality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Etudes Franaises Et Anglaises Scherer never in his lifetime or in his own country attained the rank of a popular writer, but by those who know, both at home and abroad, he was recog nized as a leading authority in European literature, and since his death his reputation has steadily grown. For Englishmen he has a special interest. He had English blood in his veins; he spoke our language perfectly, he knew our country and its institutions, and he had profoundly studied our literature. Against the gibe of an English critic that a bibliomaniac collector of second editions could procure no single volume of Scherer may be set the high compliment that Matthew Arnold paid him in selecting two of Scherer's Etude: as the text for his discourses on Milton and on Goethe. Book Description
Excerpt from Études in Modern French Art Go see the drawings by Raphael in the Louvre; see how he attaches his figure together at the knees and shoulders and hips; how careful he is to insist on this continuity of the form; how every bone hangs by a string to some other bone; and how careful he is to express this dragging and weight of the form. I have never seen a drawing by Gerome which did not insist on the same quality of nature. He may violently bend the joint of a figure, but what he insists on is the flow of it, not the break of it. This continuity is one of the great traits of a figure by Gerome; another is, that when the conditions of the picture do not give a chance to tell all the facts about a figure, and when some have to be expressed and others omitted, he expresses the facts of the mechanism of the human frame, so that the figure, however slight, is a viable machine. He has sometimes shown a peculiar reticence in stating the facts about a figure, reducing it to its necessary parts; these slighted or subordinate figures remind me strangely of Egyptian images, and have something of the same dignity; an Egyptian figure always seems to say that the artist was capable of expressing more if he chose, but preferred to hold his tongue; the facts of anatomy seem to be all there, only enclosed in a sort of envelope; and the figure is sure to be not a bundle of limbs, but an unity, depending upon itself from head to foot. This summary treatment, perhaps inspired by his love for Egyptian art, is successfully practiced alone by Gerome among modern painters.
