En este proyecto lo que pretendemos es ofrecer una alternativa a los combustibles fósiles que cubran las necesidades de las personas el día de mañana, ya que, a día de hoy, las energías renovables no tienen la suficiente potencia para abastecer las ciudades futuras. El hidrógeno no puede ser una fuente de energía porque este se encuentra en muy pocas partes aislado. Donde si lo encontraremos es combinado con otros elementos (el más común es el agua) a lo largo y ancho del planeta. Por lo que aquí se analizaremos es el hidrógeno como vector energético para un futuro próximo. Analizaremos tanto su potencial como combustible, como la producción del mismo de las diferentes maneras de extracción. Su almacenaje y las diferentes maneras de transportarlo. Para acabar poniendo unos ejemplos prácticos donde podríamos utilizar ya hidrógeno, con nuestro ahorro de combustible y nuestra cooperación con el medio ambiente, ya que inyectando hidrógeno dejamos de producir monóxidos y dióxidos de carbono, humos e incluso NOx.

En el presente documento se va a realizar un recorrido desde la aparición del hidrógeno como fuente de combustible alternativo y como ha influido en la industria del automóvil. Se ha incidido en cuáles son las peculiaridades de este tipo de combustible, así como sus beneficios y detrimentos en comparación con las formas convencionales utilizadas en la industria. A su vez, se ha realizado una investigación acerca de su producción, citando diversas alternativas para la misma, siempre teniendo presente el impacto ambiental que tiene el combustible y si realmente puede considerarse como alternativa en términos de emisiones contaminantes. Además, se ha investigado acerca de los antecedentes que se han dado, utilizando este combustible en la industrial de la automoción, indagando acerca de los éxitos o fracasos de los mismos, así como de la utilidad de estos modelos. También se ha detallado en qué punto del estado del arte se encuentra hoy en día esta tecnología de uso de hidrógeno como combustible, y de que maneras es usado, tanto con el fin de generar energía eléctrica, así como el utilizarlo como un combustible en motores de combustión reconvertidos. Por último, se han citado diversos proyectos de futuro de la industria en los que el hidrógeno puede tener un papel fundamental. Para finalizar el proyecto, se ha realizado un pequeño estudio ambiental sobre este combustible, en base a un análisis de ciclo de vida donde se realiza la comparación entre vehículos muy similares, gasolina convencional, hibrido y vehículos que utilizan el hidrógeno como combustible.
