Nesse pressuposto, o estresse no trabalho é consequência de aglomerados fenômenos que se manifestam no organismo, conseguindo afetar a saúde, e apresentando diferentes respostas entre os indivíduos. No contexto dos serviços de saúde, os profissionais de enfermagem são submetidos a situações desgastantes pela proximidade com os pacientes e pelas atividades desempenhadas e/ou pelos aspectos próprios do ambiente de trabalho e sua organização. Sendo assim, esses profissionais estão particularmente expostos a elevados níveis de pressão e estresse. O exercício da profissão de enfermagem é reconhecidamente estressante, pois é significativa a influência do trabalho no comportamento humano e também a carga de stress quando se tem a percepção de que o trabalho apresenta demandas, certas vezes, maiores do que as possibilidades de executá-los. A finalidade deste trabalho é determinar o nível de stress e o estado de saúde dos enfermeiros atuantes em unidade de emergência. A população estudada foi constituída por 73 enfermeiros de unidade de emergência de instituições hospitalares do município de São Paulo, com atendimento especializado em neurocirurgia, ortopedia e cardiologia. Os dados foram coletados utilizando-se os questionários de avaliação do Estado de Saúde, composto por 46 itens e a Escala Bianchi de Stress, modificada para melhor adequação aos objetivos propostos, constituídos por 57 itens e 3 questões abertas, versando sobre as atividades desempenhadas pelos enfermeiros. Os resultados apresentados caracterizam a população como pertencente ao sexo feminino, com faixa etária compreendida entre 20 a 30 anos, com uma média de 4,30 anos de trabalho na unidade. Verificou-se que a população apresentou médio nível de stress com escore médio de 3,69, sendo as atividades relacionadas as condições de trabalho para o desempenho das atividades de enfermeiro e à administração de pessoal consideradas como as mais estressantes.
