Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of German Grammar In every branch of knowledge there are essentials which should be thoroughly learned, yes, memorized, by the student; and he is Often puzzled to know just what those essentials are to which he should cling. This book contains a brief outline of the parts of speech, of the word-order, of case-constructions, and of the subjunctive mode; in fact, it gives those things which even student of German should master sometime early in his course. It is not intended that this book should take the place of a complete German grammar, because many details had to be omitted, to keep it within the bounds of essentials. As the parts of speech are given in regular order, an index was not considered necessary, and is not inserted. While the outline is my own, I have received valuable hints from the excellent grammars of Whit ney, Joynes and Thomas. My aim throughout has been to enable the student to grasp the subject more easily and thoroughly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Essentials of German Grammar Such is the theory of this book. Nothing has been inserted that cannot be kept constantly before the pupil; nothing has been intentionally omitted which should be kept there. Some points may seem essential that are not to be found but they are so clearly logical developments of what has been stated, the pupil in following his own judgment would be so sure to get them right, that it seemed a waste of time to discuss them. Then, too, cer tain subjects have intentionally not been treated exhaustively, so as not to confuse the slower pupil, or to deprive the teacher of an opportunity to add interest to the recitation by developing the point and giving the brighter pupils additional food for thought, while the rest are busied with what has already been given them. It will be observed that there are no notes; sentences have intentionally been simplified so that the pupil could do them without aid, that he might not be impressed from the very start with how much he did not know, and with the vast number of irregularities in the language. The best way to interest the pupil is to give him something that he can do, which has been the constant aim of this book. That the sentences are less valuable because not quite so idiomatic, no one will assert, if he believe in the disciplinary value of thorough linguistic training. Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of German As its name implies, the present work aims to present and instil those facts of the German language which are essen tial for the reading of connected texts. At a time when so many of the latter have been edited with a special view to the needs of beginners, the use of an introductory lesson book would seem to possess distinct advantages over that of an extended grammar. The writer makes no apology for the lack of completeness of grammatical statement, his conviction being that a thorough mastery of the leading facts and principles is of far greater value to the beginner than a passing acquaintance with a mass of details. The chief emphasis has accordingly fallen on the practical side of the subject; in the theoretic part clearness rather than fulness of statement has been the end in view. An effort has been made throughout to set a task that should be within the reach of the average pupil. Especial pains have been taken to limit the vocabulary to words of common occurrence. That the pupil should develop a feel ing for German construction and word arrangement is far more essential than that he should at the outset have an extensive vocabulary at his command. The ability of the average pupil to assimilate a large number of new words with each successive lesson has frequently been overrated. Book Description
Excerpt from The Germans at Home: A Practical Introduction to German Conversation, With an Appendix Containing, the Essentials of German Grammar In the preparation of the series of books for the study of the German language, of which this little work forms the first volume, I have been guided by the Principles of Imitation and Variation; for I hold that these are the only principles by which a modem language can be learnt rationally. Just as a child begins to speak its native tongue without knowing anything about the mechanism of the grammar of the language, simply by Imitation, so also a beginner should begin a modem language, simply by listening to the foreign sounds and then imitating them, after a due explanation of the sentence heard. The second process should be Variation of the material thus gathered by listening and imitating. After having acquired a certain familiarity with the language, its pronunciation and construction, the laws of the language may be gradually developed. Composition, however, should not begin till the student has made himself sufficiently acquainted with the genius and the idiomatic peculiarities of the language to apply them freely and fluently in his composition. How often do we not hear that pupils, after studying German for a period of about three or four years, have acquired not very much more than a knowledge of a few grammatical rules and inflections, together with a limited power of understanding a German book or a passage taken from a German newspaper. If called upon to translate a passage from an English writer (or merely a short colloquial phrase of everyday occurrence) idiomatically and correctly, they are, for the most part, entirely at a loss to solve the problem; and if required to enter upon a conversation in German, they will almost invariably be found unable to do so. Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical German Grammar When an inventor announces a new and improved reaping-machine or printing-press, he does so in the hope and belief that it contains essential qualities which are absent from those of his predecessors, and he further designs it to meet the increased improvements of the age. And so it is with books, be they Grammars, Dictionaries, Guide-books, or Gazetteers. We perceive, from our own experience, what is lacking in those already in existence. Book Description
Excerpt from First German Reader Never let a wrong pronunciation pass muster. Do not assign a lesson unless it has been fully explained and prepared in class by the living voice. The questions as laid down in our book are intended for the student, to insure proper review at home. Such review may be oral or written. Of course, these questions do not limit the in dividual teacher in any way and are merely suggestive. But they do outline the work of the pupil definitely so that the matter in hand shall be thoroughly dealt with and mastered. Answers should always be given in complete sentences. We have added fifteen extracts for supplementary reading. They, in turn, are arranged in order of grammatical and syn tactic difficulty. The melodies of the ten songs given in the body of the book, as well as five additional ones, are printed separately. The Grammatical Tables furnish only the absolute essentials of German accidence in systematic arrangement, and are reprinted from our basic book. Yielding to repeated requests, we are giving an abstract of German grammar with brief explanations in German. This abstract contains a set of grammatical terms in German for practical use. We have purposely given the preference to Latin nomenclature since it is more widely employed in German higher schools, and Since it is more readily intelligible to our American pupils.
