A preface would expand into a volume if it attempted to indicate even the materials for thought on such subjects, handled by Mr. Arnold, as Poetry, Gray, Keats, Shelley, Byron, Wordsworth (to name no others), which are the subjects of some of the Essays here collected. This is the last volume he ever put together, and it contains some of his ripest, best, most interesting writing. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Criticism: First Series Several of the Essays which are here collected and reprinted had the good or the bad fortune to be much criticised at the time of their first appearance. I am not now going to in ict upon the reader a reply to those criticisms for one or two explanations which are desirable, I shall elsewhere, perhaps, be able some day to find an opportunity; but, indeed. It is not in my nature, - some of my critics would rather say, not in my power, - to dispute on behalf of any Opinion, even my own, very obstinately. To try and approach truth on one side after another, not to strive or cry, nor to persist in pressing forward, on any one side, with violence and self-will, - it is only thus, it seems to me, that mortals may hope to gain any vision of the mysterious Goddess, whom we shall never see except in outline, but only thus even in outline. He who will do nothing but fight impetu ously towards her on his own, one, favourite, parti cular line, is inevitably destined to run his head into the folds of the black robe in which she is wrapped. Book Description
Excerpt from Reputations: Essays in Criticism Of the many young poets who died or were killed during the European War, none perhaps has proved a greater loss to English letters than James Elroy Flecker. By his death in Switzerland of consumption at the age of thirty England was deprived of a poet who loved her passionately whose work will endure long into the days of peace, whose reputation is likely to go on increasing, rather than to wane. At present his poetry is still, I think, not as familiar as it deserves to be, though the number of his admirers is. steadily growing both in England and in America. Flecker was never the idol of any particular set during his lifetime, and since his death very little has been written about his personality as it appeared to those who knew him well. The memories of one who valued his friendship and was closely associated with him during his literary life may thus be not unworthy of record. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Literary Criticism Very sensible that the only value they are likely to have will arise not from any special literary ability or insight of mine, but solely from the constant de light which I have taken in the writers here reviewed, - who have indeed lived with me and in me, till their world has become a genuine part of my own by no means too rich intellectual life. It is in this way, I cannot help thinking, - by soaking themselves thor oughly with a few great writers, instead of spreading their interests so widely as most literary men do, - that educated men of only ordinary capacities such as mine may do most for the service of literature and the culture of their own minds. It is but few who in any age can really aspire to the position of great cr'itics, - critics such as Coleridge, or Hazlitt, or Lamb, or Lowell, or Emerson. But many, by a more intense concentration of their inferior intel lectual powers, might become both good interpreters and, to a certain extent, just critics of a few great. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays and Criticisms, Vol. 2 of 2 Although we are unable to agree entirely with Mr. Darwin in this remark, it none the less contains an undoubted truth. \ve cannot agree, because we feel that a false theory which keenly solicits the imagination, put forward by a writer widely and deservedly esteemed, and which reposes on a multitude of facts difficult to verify, skilfully interwoven, and exceedingly hard to unravel, is likely to be very prejudicial to science. Nevertheless, science cannot make progress with out the action of two distinct classes of thinkers: the first consisting of men of creative genius, who strike out brilliant hypotheses, and who may be spoken of as theorisers' in the good sense of the word; the second, of men possessed of the critical faculty, and who test, mould into shape, perfect or destroy, the hypotheses thrown out by the former class. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Masters and New: Essays in Art Criticism The essays which have been least altered are the earliest ones and the latest; the latter because they express my present mind as I should now express it; the former because it seemed best to leave them their somewhat youthful tone, merely endeavouring that they shall contain no opinions which I do not still hold. The earliest of all in date, that on The' Sculptors of The Early Italian Renaissance, un doubtedly owes its existence, in part, to unconscious memory of an essay of Pater's which I had read some years before. The traces of its origin could not be removed Without removing its truth, for Pater had said what I wanted to say. I can only leave it with the warning that I claim no originality for it. Indeed I care much less that any of my criticisms should be new than that they should be just, and it is likely enough that many of them will be found to coincide with those of other writers whom I may or may not have read. Book Description
An NYRB Classics Original Simon Leys is a Renaissance man for the era of globalization. A distinguished scholar of classical Chinese art and literature and one of the first Westerners to recognize the appalling toll of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Leys also writes with unfailing intelligence, seriousness, and bite about European art, literature, history, and politics and is an unflinching observer of the way we live now. The Hall of Uselessness is the most extensive collection of Leys’s essays to be published to date. In it, he addresses subjects ranging from the Chinese attitude to the past to the mysteries of Belgium and Belgitude; offers portraits of André Gide and Zhou Enlai; takes on Roland Barthes and Christopher Hitchens; broods on the Cambodian genocide; reflects on the spell of the sea; and writes with keen appreciation about writers as different as Victor Hugo, Evelyn Waugh, and Georges Simenon. Throughout, The Hall of Uselessness is marked with the deep knowledge, skeptical intelligence, and passionate conviction that have made Simon Leys one of the most powerful essayists of our time.
