European Erotic Romance examines the Renaissance publication and translation of the ancient Greek erotic romances, and English adaptations of the genre by Sir Philip Sidney, Shakespeare and Lady Mary Sidney Wroth. Transgressive by nature, erotic literature engages the reader in a dialogue informed by the social and aesthetic conventions that it playfully disregards or happily reproduces. But once this intimate, arousing and, often, disturbing dialogue transitions into another language, culture or medium, it must reposition itself within new conventions. How does this happen in practice? Examining erotic literature from multiple angles, this volume starts off with an ethical evaluation of the most recent rendering of Marquis de Sade into English. Other inquiries into European letters include the works of Goethe, Georges Bataille, Pierre Guyotat and E. L. James, and the films of Michael Haneke and Patrice Chéreau. Studies of Chinese and Japanese erotic traditions complement the picture by addressing the different functions of the erotic in discrete cultural settings. Johannes D. Sexuality and language are two fundamental characteristics of human culture, and the relationship between both shows the role language has in expressing such inexpressible feelings as lust, desire and passion. Humans have long been preoccupied with the mysteries of sex, and language has been the vehicle through which to express such curiosities. Erotic literature has become a genre with such distinct characteristics that translating such texts requires a methodology and approach different from traditional translation tactics. By discussing aspects of both French and English language which influence erotic writing as well as applying existing theories of translation to a translator’s approach, this thesis aims to ultimately show how the role of the reader as a consumer and the translator as a creative agent influences both the translation and reception of an erotic text. I draw comparisons between Anaïs Nin’s erotic short stories, entitled Delta of Venus, and Emma Becker’s erotic novel, Mr., and analyze their subsequent translations to illustrate the absolute importance of interpretation and sensation over linguistic loyalty when approaching an erotic translation.

This book examines the works of four contemporary first-generation Chinese migrant writer-artists in France: François CHENG, GAO Xingjian, DAI Sijie, and SHAN Sa. They were all born in China, moved to France in their adulthood to pursue their literary and artistic ambitions, and have enjoyed the highest French and Western institutional recognitions, from the Grand Prix de la Francophonie to the Nobel Prize in Literature. They have established themselves not only as writers, but also as translators, calligraphers, painters, playwrights, and filmmakers mainly in their host country. "For medieval and early modern poets, philosophers, and political subjects, to articulate desire was to stake out the boundaries of the cultural and communal self. Working in the midst of political dangers, intellectual and religious crises, and social upheavals, many medieval and Renaissance writers began appropriating discourses of desire in order to engage in, comment upon, and cope with their cultural environments. This 'translatio' of desire offers an efficient yet flexible paradigm for examining the construction of the desiring subject. This collection of new essays addresses the translation of desire across the borders of nation, language, genre, and gender. It explores how medieval and early modern authors convert discourses of desire whose conventions are primarily male, literary, and erotic into terms that serve the mixed social, religious, political, and literary aspirations of both male and female voices. The essays range in topic from gendered authority in the high medieval epistle to the eroticized politics of a Huguenot poet. Some take up cases where the primary end of desire is literary authority and others where social and political concerns drive the adaptation of desire, but even this border is permeable to translation." --
