Book Description
The Hawkins dance technique embodies the philosophy that dance should integrate the body, mind, and soul while always following scientific principles. This system of dance training--an approach that continues to influence dancers around the world--is examined through a variety of illustrations. Photographs of dancers illustrate the technique in action. Drawings demonstrate the relationship between movements of the body and everyday objects, such as the similarities between a spiral action of the spine and a barber's pole or winding staircase. This vibrant text examines Hawkins's originality, philosophical thinking, and teaching methods.

Book Description
Erick Hawkins (1909-1994) looks back on his life and career. He recalls his initial interest in music, and how he became drawn to dance after entering Harvard University. He discusses his studies with Harald Kreutzberg in Austria and with George Balanchine at the newly formed School of American Ballet ; his ballet Show piece, created as a member of Ballet Caravan ; becoming the first male dancer in Martha Graham's company. His discussion of his preference for new music for dance is amplified by the comments of his longtime musical collaborator Lucia Dlugoszewski. He also explores questions of the purpose of making art, the importance of poetic thinking, and the role of the artist as interpreter of ideas. Works discussed in the interview include: Show piece, John Brown (later titled God's angry man), Stephen Acrobat, The strangler, Here and now with watchers, and Black lake. The program includes footage of Hawkins teaching class and performance excerpts of his works

Book Description
Modern dancer Erick Hawkins feels that his dance aesthetics have been influenced by Indian tribes living close to his hometown, Trinidad, Colorado. He did not discover dance until he was in college, where he read works by Isadora Duncan; studied dance in Salzburg, Austria; then came to New York to attend the School of American Ballet; danced with and choreographed for Ballet Caravan; eventually found ballet movements too restrictive, and turned to modern dance. After dancing with the Martha Graham Company for 12 years, he broke away and developed his own dance style, integrating Eastern concepts of body movement, such as those found in the martial art aikido into his own dance vocabulary
