Book Description
Designed for introductory courses in Old English, Word-Hoard offers a vocabulary of some 2000 words drawn from the poems that beginning students normally read. Exploiting the natural curiosity we feel about our own language, Stephen Barney draws etymological connections, provides mnemonic aids, and introduces the student to cultural and literary concepts as well as words. This second edition of his valuable book has been completely reset in a format that improves its clarity and conciseness. Reviews of the earlier edition: "An excellent piece of work. . . . It makes learning the basic vocabulary of Old English, especially of the poetry, an adventure in ideas, adding in short compass the fascination of etymology and even semantics to the otherwise laborious and at first crude efforts to understand the texts."--John C. Pope "It obviously reflects enthusiasm and a great deal of hard work, and it will serve very well the students for whom it is intended."--Thomas D. Hill, Speculum "There is nothing quite like it in the literature. . . . Such a book would have been enthusiastically greeted years ago. It is doubly welcome today."--Choice Stephen A. Barney is professor of English at the University of California at Irvine.

Book Description
An entertaining and illuminating collection of weird, wonderful, and downright baffling words from the origins of English—and what they reveal about the lives of the earliest English speakers Old English is the language you think you know until you actually hear or see it. Unlike Shakespearean English or even Chaucer’s Middle English, Old English—the language of Beowulf—defies comprehension by untrained modern readers. Used throughout much of Britain more than a thousand years ago, it is rich with words that haven’t changed (like word), others that are unrecognizable (such as neorxnawang, or paradise), and some that are mystifying even in translation (gafol-fisc, or tax-fish). In this delightful book, Hana Videen gathers a glorious trove of these gems and uses them to illuminate the lives of the earliest English speakers. We discover a world where choking on a bit of bread might prove your guilt, where fiend-ship was as likely as friendship, and where you might grow up to be a laughter-smith. The Wordhord takes readers on a journey through Old English words and customs related to practical daily activities (eating, drinking, learning, working); relationships and entertainment; health and the body, mind, and soul; the natural world (animals, plants, and weather); locations and travel (the source of some of the most evocative words in Old English); mortality, religion, and fate; and the imagination and storytelling. Each chapter ends with its own “wordhord”—a list of its Old English terms, with definitions and pronunciations. Entertaining and enlightening, The Wordhord reveals the magical roots of the language you’re reading right now: you’ll never look at—or speak—English in the same way again.

Book Description
Excerpt from An English-Anglo-Saxon Vocabulary ON the appearance of Mr Sweet's anglo-saxon Reader in 1876, it occurred to me that an English index (if I may so call it) to the words contained in the admirable Glossary appended to it would be useful, at any rate to myself. In the course of 1878 I made such an index. On looking it over, I at once observed that some very common and characteristic words were wanting in it, on account of the necessarily limited nature of the selections. It then occurred to me that many of these could be readily supplied by help of the index to Mr Sweet's History of English Sounds. I accordingly went through that index, and so filled up some of the gaps. In a very few cases I passed over the words thus indicated, because the word was unimportant or the form a little doubtful. Hence the present list contains only such English words as occur in the explanations of anglo-saxon words in Sweet's Glossary to the Reader (first edition); and (2) nearly all the words given in his History of English Sounds. The result is a vocabulary which gives some account of most of the more important words of the language; and shews, on the one hand, what words are still in use nearly unchanged, and on the other, what ideas are expressed by totally different terms in the modern and in the oldest English.
