Book Description
Excerpt from The Animal Kingdom, Vol. 1: Based Upon the Writings of the Eminent Naturalists, Audubon, Wallace, Brehm, Wood, and Others It does not require to be pointed out how fascinating a study Natural History in all its branches must ever be, or what a perpetual source of interest can be found in observing the forms and habits Of the living creatures which meet our view whatever portion of the world we visit. Still more interesting and more instructive must be a knowledge Of that class of Animated Nature to which man himself belongs, and which contains such friends of man as the dog that guards him, the horse that labors for him, the ox that supplies him food, and the sheep that furnishes him with clothing; till man had brought these under his dominion, bow inconceivably helpless he must have been! NO less instructive is it to note how the lower animals differ from or resemble Man, the crown of Nature's work; how admirably each species is adapt-cd for the loca tion in which its lot is cast, and for the uses it has to fulfil in the economy of the world; how marvellously they are endowed with power and grace and beauty. Especially in the present day is a knowledge Of the elements Of Natural History a necessary part Of our education. This work claims to minister to the educational wants of all classes, and therefore carefully avoids discussion Of unsettled points, and states nothing but incontro vertible facts. The order in which the various genera of the Mammalia is placed has been adopted in accordance with the most eminent authorities. The first two chapters are devoted to an account of the system of classification of the Animal Kingdom, and therefore may prove less interesting to many readers than the following chapters, in which the different genera and species are described. And in which there is more Of living interest and entertaining narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Buffon's Natural History of Man, the Globe, and of Quadrupeds, Vol. 1: With Additions From Cuvier, Lacepede, and Other Eminent Naturalists Few studies are at once more attractive and more bene ficial, especially to youthful minds, than the study of Na tural History. While the contemplation of the habits, manners, and instincts of the myriads of species that people the earth, the air, and the waters, affords a perennial source of amusement, it can scarcely fail, at the same time to raise our thoughts to Him by whose omnipotent fiat those myri ads were Originally called into existence; and by whom they were placed under the dominion of Man. Book Description
Excerpt from A Natural History of the Globe, of Man, of Beasts, Birds, Fishes, Reptiles, Insects, and Plants, Vol. 2 of 5: From the Writings of Buffon, Cuvier, Lacepede, and Other Eminent Naturalists The Bear enjoys the senses of seeing, hearing, an feeling, in great perfection; and yet, compared with th size of his body, his eye is very small; his ears are als short; his skin is coarse; and his hair very thick. Hi smell is exquisite; more so, perhaps, than that of an other animal, the internal surface of his nose being ver extensive, and excellently calculated to receive the in pression of smells. He strikes with his paws as a ma strikes with his fists; but in whatever particulars he ma bear a rude kind of resemblance to the human specie: he is only rendered the more deformed by them; nor d they give him the smallest superiority over other an mals. Book Description
Excerpt from A Natural History of the Globe, of Man, of Beasts, Birds, Fishes, Reptiles, Insects and Plants, Vol. 1 of 5: From the Writings of Buffon, Cuvier and Other Eminent Naturalists It will be at once apparent that the work was not designed for the scientific, but only for the general, reader. The Eng lish Editor appears to have had it in view, to collect from But: fon and others, the most accurate and lively descriptions of the various objects Wth belong to the animal kingdom, for the purpose of forming a popular treatise on Natural History he therefore avoided the use of scientific terms, and arranged the subjects with little regard to scientific classification.
