Book Description
Excerpt from Materials for the Study of Elementary Economics In the choice of the materials the editors have been guided by actual classroom experiment. The nucleus of the book was originally printed as a series of bulletins which have for three formed a part of the reading required of beginning students in economics at the University of Chicago. During this time unsatisfactory selections have been eliminated and much new matter has been added. Copies of the bulletins have been submitted for criticism to teachers in several other institutions. The volume which now appears may thus be said already in a measure to have demonstrated its usefulness as an aid in college instruction. Excerpt from Outlines of Elementary Economics It is very possible - indeed it is intended that out of many of these questions the student will merely become puzzled. It is believed that this is pedagogically helpful; answers have no plilt'o except as following questions. It must happen also that one question be found of profit to this or that student, while entirely failing to appeal to a third. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Economics With Special Reference to Social, and Business Conditions in the United States Recent events have brought the people Of the United States face to face with numerous new economic problems, many Of which are likely to remain unsolved for years to come; besides, they have complicated to a marked degree those Old problems which were pressing for solution at the outbreak of the Great War. In consequence, our leaders are becoming more and more convinced that increased attention Should be given in our secondary schools to a serious consideration Of the fundamental principles on which these problems rest. Such a conviction is a new one in many quarters, for hitherto the notion has very generally prevailed, especially among uni versity teachers, that no formal study Of the Principles of Economics should be undertaken before the sophomore year in college. Obviously such a notion carries the implication, un conscious perhaps, that the fundamentals Of Economics, even in their simplest forms, should be withheld from the great mass of young men and women engaged in industry, and restricted to the select few who are able by one means or another to be come college students. Such a notion not only carries vicious implication, but it also is ill founded; for hundreds Of high schools the country over prove by experience that their pupils are fully capable of grasping the elements of economic science when presented concretely and in a way to show their relationship to practical affairs. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Economics: An Introduction to the Study of Economics and Sociology The Changing World in Which We Live. The world in which we live is an ever changing, restless world; it is not static or at a standstill. Institutions, laws and ways of getting a living are different to-day from those prevailing when George Washington was President; and before the year 2000 is ushered in many further changes will occur. There is progress, or at least change, as the years go by in government, in moral ideals and in methods employed in industry. Constant change is the law of life, in institu tions as well as in animals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Principles of Economics: Together With a Short Sketch of Economic History First of all, it has been deemed well to present to the stu dent in the opening chapter an idea of what the science is, and to show him, as is being done in the present chapter, what are the main topics with which the science is con cerned. In another introductory chapter there is pre sented a discussion of some of the fundamental institutions in our social order. In the second place, it is thought advisable to give in a few chapters a skeleton outline of the economic history of mankind, with more particular attention to those late developments in English and American economic history which have given rise to existing economic conditions. This part of the subject is often omitted from elementary text-books, and therefore a word of explanation is here in place. Book Description
Excerpt from Home Economics in Elementary and Secondary Schools This book has been written with the hope that it will be of assistance in both of these situations. It is based on several years' experience in teaching a special methods course in which many of the students have been experienced teachers. The point of view that is emphasized and the conclusions that are reached are the results of the discus sions carried on in these classes. It is because this material embodies or reflects the consensus of opinion of many per sons who have received their training in schools in different parts of the country that it is offered as a first step toward a more scientific study of the teaching of home economics. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Political Economy As the purpose of this work was mistaken by many critics when the first edition appeared in 1888, it may be well to take this opportunity of explaining that the word elementary' in the title must be understood in its proper sense, as indicating that the book contains the essential parts of political economy, not that it is intended for young children, nor even for ill-prepared candidates for examination who desire something to commit to memory. In writing it I had no such persons in view, but was thinking of the intelligent man of the world who desires to be told in small compass and ordinary language what the practically important part of the teaching of political economy is. I therefore tried to explain as directly as possible the general laws on which the material welfare of nations and individuals depends, and did not scruple to abandon both the traditional arrangement of subjects and the special terminology of the economists. Alterations, some of which were rendered necessary by the changes made by the British budget of i 894, have been made on pp. 142-145.Otherwise the present edition is an exact reprint of the first.
