Excerpt from Elementary Political Economy As the purpose of this work was mistaken by many critics when the first edition appeared in 1888, it may be well to take this opportunity of explaining that the word elementary' in the title must be understood in its proper sense, as indicating that the book contains the essential parts of political economy, not that it is intended for young children, nor even for ill-prepared candidates for examination who desire something to commit to memory.
