Book Description
"It has long been established that addiction or SUD - Substance Use Disorder - ruins lives and leads to illness, destruction of families, and death. Chasing the "high" often brings the user closer to death each time the use is increased even though the person may choose to ignore the risk. Effective treatment is essential to help recovering addicts change their lives and become productive citizens, leading happy lives in perpetual sobriety. Helping them adjust their focus from shame and guilt to improved self-esteem and renewed sense of purpose in life is essential for avoiding prolonged substance abuse. In addition to traditional approaches, the use of creative writing as a treatment modality can help the addicted person obtain and deploy the tools necessary to remain sober. In this way, creative writing can help actualize the whole person. Inviting people with addictions to share their creative writing with the world helps them to connect their experiences, observations, and recommendations to others. This book is a collaborative effort between research, facilitation, and contributions of the creative men at St. Christopher's Inn. Adding to the variety and depth of the creative productions is the incorporation of post-program writing from men who have completed the program at St. Christopher's and have remained connected in this special endeavor. This allows a window into the minds of the longer-term recovering addicts, especially relating to the tools that help them through life's persistent challenges. With this book, we hope to show that writing does help in the treatment of chemical addiction"--

Book Description
Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Book Description
New and improved therapies to treat and protect against drug dependence and abuse are urgently needed. In the United States alone about 50 million people regularly smoke tobacco and another 5 million are addicted to other drugs. In a given year, millions of these individuals attemptâ€"with or without medical assistanceâ€"to quit using drugs, though relapse remains the norm. Furthermore, each year several million teenagers start smoking and nearly as many take illicit drugs for the first time. Research is advancing on promising new means of treating drug addiction using immunotherapies and sustained-release (depot) medications. The aim of this research is to develop medications that can block or significantly attenuate the psychoactive effects of such drugs as cocaine, nicotine, heroin, phencyclidine, and methamphetamine for weeks or months at a time. This represents a fundamentally new therapeutic approach that shows promise for treating drug addiction problems that were difficult to treat in the past. Despite their potential benefits, however, several characteristics of these new methods pose distinct behavioral, ethical, legal, and social challenges that require careful scrutiny. Such issues can be considered unique aspects of safety and efficacy that are fundamentally related to the distinct nature and properties of these new types of medications.

Book Description
Addictive behaviors beg for an informed explanation to guide patients, families, students, and clinicians through the maddening and often incomprehensible nature of the addictions. Too often addiction is perceived to be merely a moral weakness or purely a brain disease, ignoring the deep personal pain that can permeate the lives of the addicted. But taking an honest look at the underlying emotional or mental issues can more clearly illuminate not only the causes of the addiction, but also the cure. Doctors Edward J. Khantzian and Mark J. Albanese, leading researchers in the field of addiction, see addictions primarily as a kind of self medication—a self medication that can temporarily soothe anxiety or pain, but that ultimately wreaks havoc on the lives and health of both the addicted and their loved ones. With practical advice, compelling case studies, and nuanced theory drawn from their years in clinical practice, Doctors Khantzian and Albanese look at the core reasons behind many addictions and provide a pathway to hope. Understanding Addiction as Self Medication looks at a range of addictions, including alcohol and substance abuse, and clearly explains how to understand other addictive behaviors through the lens of the Self Medication Hypothesis. This book provides a much-needed guide to both understanding addictions and working towards healing.

Book Description
Here is an informational and practical book that systematically addresses the complex relationships between chemical abuse/dependency, aggression, and family violence. Directed toward professional chemical dependency and family violence counselors, it provides specific guidelines for the assessment of child abuse, incest, and marital rape, as they are likely to be encountered in a chemical dependency treatment setting. Experts outline treatment suggestions for chemically dependent and codependent individuals who are or have been the victims/perpetrators of family violence. Aggression, Family Violence and Chemical Dependency contains two unique and very detailed chapters on the relationship between aggression and the use of alcohol and other mood-altering substances as well as the connections between these two and other physiological and psychological correlates of violence.

Book Description
This book examines the benefits and uses of art therapy in the treatment of addiction and trauma, highlighting its effectiveness at revealing underlying causes and relapse triggers, as well as treating co-occurring conditions that impair learning and recovery. This book also focuses on art therapy for trauma within specific populations, including incarcerated individuals, military personnel and survivors of commercial sexual exploitation. Quinn discusses how art therapy is often carried out alongside combined approaches, such as CBT and DBT, and how it can help those with cognitive issues to learn through treatment. Furthermore, this book explores the benefits art therapy has for people with co-morbid conditions, such as dementia, emotional disorders and traumatic and acquired brain injuries. With co-authored chapters from leading researchers in art therapy, the book demonstrates how art therapy can help to uncover triggers, process trauma and find a means of self-expression whilst working towards a sustained recovery.

"This publication does not offer a pre-packaged programme of education for drug abuse prevention that can be picked up and implemented. It is rather an attempt to provide a conceptual basis upon which teachers, policy makers and school administrators can make decisions about school based drug prevention programmes in order to achieve greater success in education terms" -- p. 6.
