Book Description
This volume describes a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project involving educators from Belize and the U.S. to illustrate the critical role of shared dialogue in transnational teacher education. First identifying issues which inhibited the success of formerly didactic training delivered to Belizean teachers by U.S. educators, this volume documents the transformational impact of a shift to collaborative training approaches and uses first-person accounts from Belizean and U.S. stakeholders to illustrate their successes. Chapters powerfully illustrate that by engaging in Freirean-like dialogue and building relationships based on a mutual understanding of the cultural and historical context, as well as the identity of educators involved, partners are better able to engage in effective transnational pedagogical collaboration. Particular attention is paid to the importance of acknowledging the post-colonial setting and unique positionality of teachers in Belize. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in action research and teacher research, multicultural education, and continued professional development in particular. Those interested in teacher training, education research, and international and comparative education will also benefit from this book.

This case study describes the everyday life of two contrasting schools in Belize, a private school and a public school. Modern day school issues affecting the lives of students and families are discussed. In addition, short interviews are conducted with former students of the Belizean school system between the ages of 17 and 26 and explore the changing face of education in Belize. Book Description
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between teacher characteristics (teachers' sense of efficacy, teaching experience, educational qualification, professional qualification, and length of time with the curriculum) and the stages of concern of teachers implementing a new primary school curriculum in the country of Belize. Belizean teachers (N = 173), with varying teaching experience, qualifications and length of time working with the new curriculum, participated in the study. These participants completed a survey consisting of (a) a Stages of Concern Questionnaire, which measured the concerns of teachers towards the implementation of the new curriculum; (b) a Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale, which measured teachers' level of confidence in implementing the new curriculum; and (c) a personal data sheet. Findings from stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that teachers' sense of efficacy, length of time with the curriculum, teaching experience and professional qualifications significantly correlated with teachers' stages of concern. Qualitative analyses suggested that factors such as the complexity of the new curriculum, the varying viewpoints and interpretations from the change facilitators, and the need for more input from teachers in all aspects of curriculum planning and discussion affected the concerns of teachers working with the new curriculum. The findings have implications for efforts to enhance individual teachers' practice and suggestions for future research.
