Book Description
A dynamic strategy for the control of concentrate flowrates has been developed and commercially implemented. Concentrate flowrate control is important in the optimisation of flotation circuits, since circulating loads, mass pulls and residence times in cells are all affected by this. With all these variables controlled and stabilised, further optimisation of concentrate grade and circuit recovery becomes easier. The base layer level stabilisation provided by the FloatStar(TM) multivariable controller further enhances the operability of the flotation process.

Book Description
The optimized operation of a flotation circuit is investigated analytically. The analysis gives a simple and exact solution for cases where the concentrations of streams can be characterized adequately by scalar values. The method can also apply to the general case with concentration vectors, for which the more intricate analysis has not yet been completed. The solution of the scalar version gives some insight into the general case and a simple adaptation might give a first approximation of the general solution. The method introduces 'enrichment functions' which can be derived from flotation rate models, by other modelling techniques or from practical measurements. The enrichmnent function describes the upgrading of concentrations and has several features that make it useful in practical and theoretical applications. One of these features is its facilitation of the analysis of optimization.

Book Description
Mineral processing deals with complex particle systems with two-, three- and more phases. The modeling and understanding of these systems are a challenge for research groups and a need for the industrial sector. This Special Issue aims to present new advances, methodologies, applications, and case studies of computer-aided analysis applied to multiphase systems in mineral processing. This includes aspects such as modeling, design, operation, optimization, uncertainty analysis, among other topics. The special issue contains a review article and eleven articles that cover different methodologies of modeling, design, optimization, and analysis in problems of adsorption, leaching, flotation, and magnetic separation, among others. Consequently, the topics covered are of interest to readers from academia and industry.

Book Description
The control of flotation plants is by no means trivial. Flotation is one of the most interactive minerals processing operations. The interactive nature of flotation circuits result in oscillation of level and hence grade and recovery. Also poor level setpoint tracking and disturbances have negative influence on grades an recoveries. The result is an unstable plant with limited scope for optimisation. An advanced level controller, FloatStar(tm), has been developed to provide tight control and to reduce the amount of disturbances in flotation levels. It has been shown on a number of plants that the system results in faster and better setpoint tracking, better regulatory control and faster settling times after start-ups and disturbances. The successful development of the FloatStar(tm) has made it easier to investigate the area of optimisation on flotation circuits. Mintek has identified the need for a more meaningful set of setpoints or aeration rates to use as a basis for control than levels and have advocated flow control by looking after residence times. When the fed conditions change the ideal solution would be an algorithm or strategy that finds the new optimum conditions rather than just having an unguided hunt from the previous point. A multivariable flow optimising algorithm, FrothStar, has been developed to calculate optimum level setpoints and/or aeration rates that will aim to optimise the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit.

Book Description
Process Systems Engineering brings together the international community of researchers and engineers interested in computing-based methods in process engineering. This conference highlights the contributions of the PSE community towards the sustainability of modern society and is based on the 13th International Symposium on Process Systems Engineering PSE 2018 event held San Diego, CA, July 1-5 2018. The book contains contributions from academia and industry, establishing the core products of PSE, defining the new and changing scope of our results, and future challenges. Plenary and keynote lectures discuss real-world challenges (globalization, energy, environment and health) and contribute to discussions on the widening scope of PSE versus the consolidation of the core topics of PSE. Highlights how the Process Systems Engineering community contributes to the sustainability of modern society Establishes the core products of Process Systems Engineering Defines the future challenges of Process Systems Engineering
