Book Description
Instruction in this color-illustrated book introduces three of the most commonly used dry media for drawing and sketching. Roughly the first one-third of this art students' manual explains the properties and uses of charcoal, sanguine crayon, and chalk, and demonstrates how to get started with them on art projects. Information here includes recommended papers, ways of making strokes, shading, color blending, tonal range, and correcting mistakes. The book's remaining two-thirds presents a series of 16 practical exercises that employ all three media. Exercises include creating chiaroscuro (shades and shadows), drawing still-lifes and landscapes, mastering perspective, drawing nudes, and making portraits. Here is a practical art class instruction manual that can also be used as a self-teaching book by ambitious amateur artists. Full-color illustrations on nearly every page.

Book Description
"Beginner Art Guides instruct in the fundamentals of art, then present a series of projects for the student to master. Projects are presented in order of difficulty, and are supplemented with practical suggestions, ideas for color experiments, and techniques for creating special effects. The final page of each book presents a capsule biography of a famous artist whose work offers classic examples of the title's central subject. This volume summarizes basic art principles for art students and ambitious amateurs, and then presents several dry-medium projects for them to complete. This title presents a brief, enlightening illustrated discussion of James Ensor (1860-1949), a Belgian artist particularly noted for his work in charcoal, chalk, and sanguine."--Publisher's website.

Book Description
Excerpt from Drawing in Charcoal and Crayon: For the Use of Students and Schools There are two methods of working in charcoal - one, in which the charcoal point is used alone, the shading being put in with lines which are not blended, no stump, or rubbing together of any kind being allowed. This style Of drawing is principally used in illustrating, as it is more easily reproduced than those in which the stump is used. Full details of working in this manner will be given later. The other method is that in which the charcoal is blended with a stump, no lines being visible in the modeling. This manner of drawing is that most generally employed in art schools, and is susceptible of higher finish than the other.
