Book Description
Excerpt from Cotton or Weevils No doubt you know that the many different creatures living upon the earth eat many different kinds of food. A man eats several kinds of meat and a great many more kinds of vegetables. The meat he eats comes, of course, from the body of some animal, and the vegetables grow in the soil. Our cattle, and wild animals of the same kind, such as the buffalo and the deer, live entirely upon plants. On the other hand, such fierce and dreaded animals as the lion and tiger live only on the flesh of other animals. These other animals, however, feed mostly on plants. Thus we see that the vegetable kingdom really provides the food for the animal kingdom. Not all plants are equally good as food for man. In fact, the vast majority of plants grown in the different parts of the world he will not touch as food. Plant-eating animals are much like man in this way; they do not eat all the different kinds of plants, but 'pick or choose those they like best. Some animals that are heavy plant feeders have a very large variety of plants from which they can get their food, while others eat only a few plants and so must carefully select what they are to eat. Book Description
Excerpt from Collection of Weevils and Infested Squares as a Means of Control of the Cotton-Boll Weevil in the Mississippi Delta The investigations of 1916 were conducted under seasonal and climatic conditions differing considerably from those of 1915 and were more extensive, so that it seems that the combined results of the two seasons' investigations may be considered as more or less conclusive. The following report presents a rather brief summary of these experiments, together with the conclusions which seem warranted by the observations. Book Description
Excerpt from Boll-Weevil Cotton in Texas Some of the solitary bracts representing reduced involucres, are not of the usual expanded form, but narrowly tubular or trumpet shaped. (pl. III, Fig. To form these tubular bracts the margins must have been united or fused together at a very early stage of development, while the abortion of the other bracts and of the flower bud must have taken place at a still earlier stage in the for mation of the involucre. The tubular bracts may be described as ascidia, a name that has been applied to similar malformations of leaves in several other families of plants. The marginal teeth of the solitary bracts are reduced in number, especially those of the tubular bracts, or ascidia. Having lost their floral buds at the early stage of development the reduced involucres can serve only as leaves, and they persist for the remainder of the season, as already stated. The stalks or pedicels of the reduced involucres are very short and slender, more like petioles of small leaves than like pedi cels of normal buds or bolls. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mexican Cotton Ball Weevil As shown by Table I, 553 observations have been recorded upon this point, the majority of the observations being made in the fall of 1902. Considering the temperatures prevailing at the four periods studied, it appears that the range in development during the average season at Victoria, Tex., has been included, and it seems probable that from these temperatures as a basis the length of the egg stage can be approximately determined for any season and for any locality within the present area of infestation. Book Description
Excerpt from Recent Experimental Work on Poisoning Cotton-Boll Weevils The results of these experiments were certainly definite and Sig nificant, but it was considered possible that they might have been due to some peculiar conditions prevailing during that season and that they could not be duplicated during another year. Consequently the experiments during the season of 1916 were planned largely to check the results secured during 1915, with the important change that provision was made for a wider range in the periods of applica tion. In 1916 the applications in the different experiments extended from the first appearance of the weevils in June until about the 1st of September. On the whole the results in 1916 were just as definite as were those of 1915, and the greater importance of the late-season applications Was very plainly demonstrated. In this connection a detailed description of a few of the tests is of interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
