Excerpt from Contemporary Index to Printed Parish (and Non-Parochial) Registers (1908 Edition), Vol. 1: With a Supplementary List of Manuscript Transcripts to Be Found in the Public Libraries of England and Wales Printing Press, the unique and invaluable information contained in our Parish Registers, render it very desirable that without delay a Record, which can be kept annually up to date, of what has been done in this direction, should be obtainable by those for whose ultimate benefit these endeavours are being made. This Index is intended to provide such a Record, and, if its continued existence be desired, it is proposed to reprint periodically, at intervals of not less than 3 years, and to issue an annual Supplement in intervening years, containing a list of those Registers which have been printed, in part or whole, during the preceding twelve months. To render it of the proper utility, in saving both the time and temper of those who may refer to it (i) the Parishes are arranged topographically, according to County and (ii) mere Extracts, which do not profess to note every Entry in the corresponding part of the Parish Register, are rigidly excluded. The absence of either, or both, of these essentials has been a serious drawback to the usefulness of most lists hitherto published.
