Book Description
Dr. BRUNO BLOCH, professor of the Dermatological clinic of Zurich, began a new era of eczema research by attempting to sensitize guinea pigs to primula. It was during this period that I had the pleasure of being Dr. BLOCH's chief resident, and could observe these experiments. It was only in 1955 that Dr. E. BUJARD, professor of Histology of the University of Geneva, Dr. R. BRUN, chief of laboratories of my Dermatology Department and I began to work in the field of experimental eczema on the nipples and flanks of guinea pigs. Besides these collaborators, to whom I am very grateful, a few others have participated in our experiments. Among these new co-workers the most im portant was Mrs. NICOLE HUNZIKER, chief resident of my clinic. From 1960 on, she worked on the eczema experiments with guinea pigs. Our research has been conside rably advanced by Dr. HUNZIKER. Untill now we have published 30 communica tions on this subject, but the publications about our results have been very short. It now seemed appropriate to publish a monograph and Dr. HUNZIKER undertook this very toilsome task. I would like to take this occasion to thank her for her many years of collaboration both in the clinic and in the laboratory. I am also very grateful to Professor BUJARD who, in spite of the fact that he is retired, continues to work with us. We continually profit from his great experience. Dr.

Book Description
The second edition of this text has been revised and refocused to reflect the transformation of immunotoxicology from a subdiscipline of toxicology to an independent area of research that can best be described as "environmental immunology." New chapters discuss the role of immune mediators in liver, lung, and skin toxicity, in regulating chemical- metabolizing enzymes, and in the immunosuppression produced by ultraviolet light. More emphasis is placed on the clinical consequences of immunotoxicity, as well as the interpretation of experimental data for predicting, human health risk.; The second edition is divided into three major sections: immunosuppression, autoimmunity, and hypersensitivity. This new organization of the text allows for a more thorough treatment of these phenomena, with greater attention to test methods, theoretical considerations, and clinical implications. The book includes many chapters on specific environmental agents, therapeutic drugs, biological agents, and drugs of abuse, as well as on immune-mediated toxicity in specific organ systems.

Book Description
This work presents and evaluates methods employed to identify the potential of certain types of chemicals to adversely affect the skin. A variety of test methods are included such as tests for skin penetration, metabolism, irritation, the skin immune system, photo effects, skin cancer, and topical effects of retinoids and depigmenting chemicals. Tests for chemicals that affect the reproductive and nervous system are also included. Both animal and human tests that have been standardised and tests that are under development and employ animal alternatives are addressed in this book. Besides different testing methods, a rationale for accepting non-animal models and a review of some regulatory agency discussions about animal alternative tests are included.

Book Description
Like almost every major scientific or medical breakthrough in history, the transdermal delivery of drugs started as only an idea - slowly moving its way from the drawing board to actual testing and eventually approval. Today, there are more than 20 companies involved in transdermal drug delivery. In addition, almost every large pharmaceutical firm has ongoing transdermal delivery programs. But in spite of this effort and after 15 years from the introduction of the Nitroglycerin patch, only six transdermal drugs exist in the marketplace. The practice has been hampered by the fact that most drugs, as well as many excipients used in the manufacture of transdermal patches, cause skin irritation or skin sensitization. Similar problems exist with the application of dermatologicals and cosmetics to skin, which in many cases are equally as severe as those encountered in transdermal delivery. Biochemical Modulation of Skin Reactions: Transdermals, Topicals, Cosmetics presents a series of chapters describing technologies and the practical application of biochemicals which might lead to the reduction or abrogation of these skin reaction. In addition, it addresses those areas of skin immunology and skin sciences that account for the processes that control irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and outlines the numerous cellular and molecular factors involved in the development of irritation and sensitization. Indeed, Biochemical Modulation of Skin Reactions helps serve as a catalyst for further research in the field, allowing for more drugs and cosmetics to be applied to the skin without adverse effects.
