The aim of this research is to assess the level of knowledge on HIV/AIDS and its risk factors, attitude towards HIV/AIDS and AIDS patients and its transmission and to identify high risk behaviors associated with HIV/AIDS among university students in Xinjiang. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among students enrolled Xingjiang University and Xinjiang Medical University. Data was collected using self-administered standardized questionnaire on KAP re HIV/AIDS among 400 students. Mean knowledge scores is significantly different by ethnicity, sex, subject major, and year of study in university. Only 33.3% of the respondents had positive attitude towards HIV/AIDS patient. With regards high risk behavior associated with HIV transmission, 15.8% had at least 1 risk behavior related to unprotected sexual exposure Conclusion: HIV/AIDS health education efforts should be intensified in non-medical universities, among female, first year and Uyghur and other minorities' students. About two-thirds of the students had negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS patients. Around 15% of these students reported having at least 1 high risk behavior related to unprotected sex

The current study utilized the Information Motivation Behavioral Skills (IMB) model (Fisher & Fisher, 1992) as a framework to investigate HIV risk behaviors among a sample of university students in Trinidad. The Caribbean ranks second in the world in terms of HIV rates, and although a relatively small island, the rates of HIV infection in Trinidad are of grave proportions. This research examined their existing level of HIV/AIDS knowledge, their motivation to practice safer sex, and their perceived behavioral skills at engaging in HIV/AIDS preventive behaviors. Further, this study also sought to test the fit of the IMB model to the data for this sample of Trinidadian university students. A sample of 90 sexually active participants were selected for purposes of this study and were recruited from various classes at the University of the West Indies located in Trinidad. The findings revealed that the IMB model did fit the data for this sample. However, the information variable was found to not be related to any of the model variables. Motivation on the other hand was found to be the strongest predictor of some of the preventive behaviors. Cultural examinations revealed that there were moderately high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, low condom use and HIV testing, and somewhat positive attitudes toward preventive acts among the participants. Exploratory analyses also revealed significant gender differences. The implications of this study for its contribution to the continued effort to understand the reasons behind the growing prevalence of HIV/AIDS are also discussed.

The quantitative findings indicated high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, self-concept and self-efficacy. Risky sexual behaviour was measured in terms of condom use and the number of sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study with males reporting significantly more risky sexual behaviour. More males (70% vs. 43 % females) reported no condom use when engaging in sex. More males (62 % vs. 28 % females) reported having had two or more sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study. Results also suggested that an increase in knowledge of HIV/AIDS would predict an increase in the use of condoms particularly for males. Lower self-efficacy seemed to predict an increase in the number of sexual partners for males. The focus group discussions highlighted students' views of HIV/AIDS knowledge in relation to their sexual practices, attitudes and sexual decision-making. Influences such as personal factors (self-concept and self-efficacy), social factors (e.g. peer influences, gender, and status) and environmental factors (e.g. media) were investigated. Participants also commented on the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS campaigns and the adequacy in provision of health services at college and community level. From the findings, guidelines were developed which may be used to reflect on current intervention programmes and may be considered when developing future interventions programmes, policies, or campaigns in promoting safer sexual practices amongst youth as a means of addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
