Paul Delaroche was a hugely popular painter during his lifetime, first making his name with a series of historical scenes which enjoyed great acclaim at the Paris Salon. His renown extended far beyond his native country. Honored by almost every major academy, his pictures were sought by collectors in Britain, Germany, and Russia. One of his British patrons, Richard Seymour Conway (1800-1870), 4th Marquis of Hertford, acquired ten of his oil paintings and two watercolors. This group, one of the most extensive outside France, is in The Wallace Collection, which houses Lord Hertford's collections in what was once his London residence. In Devotional Portraiture and Spiritual Experience Ingrid Falque analyses the meditative functions of early Netherlandish paintings including devotional portraits, that is portraits of people kneeling in prayer. Such paintings have been mainly studied in the context of commemorative and social practices, but as Ingrid Falque shows, they also served as devotional instruments. By drawing parallels between the visual strategies of these paintings and texts of the major spiritual writers of the medieval Low Countries, she demonstrates that paintings with devotional portraits functioned as a visualisation of the spiritual process of the sitters. The book is accompanied by the first exhaustive catalogue of paintings with devotional portraits produced in the Low Countries between c. 1400 and 1550. Based on consilia and decisiones, Wouter Druwé studies the multinormative framework on loans and credit in the Golden Ages of Antwerp and Amsterdam (c. 1500-1680). He analyzes the use of a wide variety of legal financial techniques in the Low Countries, such as money lending and the taking of interest, the constitution of annuities, cession and delegation, bearer bonds, bills of exchange, partnerships, and representation in financial affairs, as well as the consequences of monetary fluctuations. Special attention is paid to how the transregional European system of learned Roman and canon law (ius commune) was applied in daily ‘learned legal practice’.
