Book Description
Excerpt from Chemical Investigations of the Tobacco Plant, Vol. 3: Tobacco Seed A control group received a standard chick feed fortified with 2 per cent by weight of cod liver oil. In no case was the growth rate of the chickens fed upon tobacco seed satisfactory. The diet in which the oil of the seed had been replaced by cornstarch gave a Slow steady growth at a rate of approximately one-quarter of that of the control animals. The growth rate on the mixture of tobacco seed and mash was about the same, but the animals on the other diets grew very slowly and most of the chicks fed on the extracted seed diet died. Daily records of the amount of food eaten by the various groups Show very poor consumption of the tobacco seed diets. This suggests that the factor limiting the growth of the birds was the small intake of food, possibly owing to a taste that they found unpleasant. This factor, of course, played no part in the experiments on pigeons Since force feeding was resorted to in that case. Book Description
Excerpt from Chemical Investigations of the Tobacco Plant: The Effect Upon the Composition of the Tobacco Plant of the Form in Which Nitrogen Is Supplied The agricultural problems presented by the use of nitrogen in one or other of these forms are very complex. Choice is dictated by the conditions in the soil which must be controlled, by the toler ance of the species to the soil conditions that are achieved, and also by the susceptibility of the species to diseases which may arise or which may be controlled by the soil conditions that are established. If these factors are successfully dealt with, an organism that is re garded as a normal plant results and the agricultural problem is, to this extent at least, solved. Book Description
Excerpt from Chemical Investigations of the Tobacco Plant, Vol. 5: Chemical Changes That Occur During Growth Note: The chemical investigations of tobacco herein described were carried out as part of a general project under the title Cell Chemistry, by the Department of Biochemistry of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, New Haven, Conn. The Department has enjoyed the benefit of close cooperation from the Tobacco Substation. The expenses were shared by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Book Description
Excerpt from Chemical Investigations of the Tobacco Plant, Vol. 7: Chemical Changes That Occur in Stalks During Culture Light and in Darkness The samples in light lost about 5 percent of their water promptly (table remained at this level for many hours and finally slowly lost an additional 5 percent. The samples in darkness gradually gained a small amount of water, retained this excess for nearly 100 hours, but ultimately slowly lost about 9 percent. The changes were sluggish and were not ex tensive, comments that apply equally Well to many Of the detailed chemical conversions that were Observed in this tissue. The data for organic solids, although slightly irregular, doubtless due to minor sampling errors, indicate a scarcely significant alteration in the light over the entire periodl, but there was a significant loss in the dark. This Observation is in marked con trast to the behavior of leaves which, under Similar circumstances, Show a prompt and extensive increase in organic solids in light, and a profound loss in the dark. Book Description
Excerpt from Chemical Investigations of the Tobacco Plant, Vol. 6: Chemical Changes That Occur in Leaves During Culture in Light and Darkness The significance Of asparagine in plant physiology was scarcely discussed at this time. In 1844, however, a chance Observation by Menici, a pharmacist Of Pisa, led to a study of asparagine which at one stroke made many of the chemical and physiological relationships Of this substance clear. Menici had had occasion to sprout vetch seeds in the dark and, from an extract Of the etiolated seedlings, had prepared a small quantity Of a crystalline compound that he took to Piria at the University Of Pisa with a request for identification. Piria (48) suspected its nature at once and repeated Menici's experiment on a large scale. He showed that asparagine could be Obtained in equally large quantities from vetch seedlings whether these were sprouted in light or in the dark; that none of the substance was present in the unsprouted seeds; and that it disappeared from the tissues of the plants as these approached flowering, none at all being found as the fruit rip ened. Accordingly, he inferred that light has no influence on the for mation of the substance, that it is produced from the protein of the seed, and is utilized by the plant in the later stages of growth.
