Book Description
"The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy - the Burlington Route - was known for its Zephyrs, the fleet of fluted stainless-steel passenger trains taht connected Chicago to points west. However, there was more to the CB&Q than flashy passenger trains. The railroad connected the nation's heartland, relying hevaily on agricultural traffic, including grain, livestock, and perishable goods. Ownded jointly by the Northern Pacific and Great Northern, the Burlington prospered through the forties and fifties. The heart of the Burlington was its Chicago-to-Denver main line, which hosted several of the Q's famous passenger trains, including the California Zephyr, Denver Zephyr, and Nebraska Zephyr. The line also hosted freight trains, including Chicago-to-Denver time freights, livestock specials, and large blocks of reefers (refrigerator cars). The start of the Golden Years for the Q was 1934, when the original Zephyr first created a stir around the country. The Burlington had maintained a modern fleet of steam locomotives in 1930, powerful O-5 and O-5A 4-8-4 Northerns and class S-4 Hudsons that were the primary fast freight and name passenger power into the 1940s. In Burlington Route Across the Hearland, Jeff Wilson highlights much of this action, along with the first arrival of freight diesels and the evolution of Zephyr operations and equipment." -From back cover

Book Description
With declining passenger revenues Burlington President Ralph Budd realized something unique was needed to lure passengers back to train travel. The result was the Zephyr. The Zephyr's appeal during the Great Depression was tremendous, its sleek lines and streamline design was the beginning of a styling revolution. In 1934, the only real hope was the future and the future was the Zephyr. A Burlington Superintendent best summed the Zephyr experience in these words, ''You would first notice a speck of stainless-steel emerging out of the distant haze. Then in spectacular fashion it would flash by, a mass of shimmering steel, traveling a hundred miles an hour and within seconds vanish again in the distance.'' Featured in high quality photos and descriptive captions the Burlington Zephyrs are shown in a variety of scenic, rural and urban settings. Also included are vintage brochures, timetables, postcards and ads.

Book Description
In this companion volume to his Burlington Route - The Early Zephyrs, author Geoffrey H. Doughty traces the postwar Zephyr fleet from the birth of the modern dome car in 1945 through to the Burlington Northern merger of 1970. Along the way, readers are introduced to such streamlined passenger train icons as the 1949 California Zephyr and the 1956 Denver Zephyr, as well as lesser lights from the CB&Q's timetables. With the American traveling public increasingly opting for airliners and automobiles through the 1950s and the 1960s, Burlington Route management aggressively pursued railroad passengers even as much of their competitors sought service curtailments in the face of declining patronage and rising labor costs. All of these factors are woven into this fascinating story of The Way of the Zephyrs.
