A poet participates in the eternal, the infinite, and the one." Ancient cultures recognized that the mystery of creation is the mystery of "original language." So John's Gospel declares, "In the beginning was the Word." And India's Mandukya Upanishad says, "All that ever was, is, or will be is created through the syllable Om." The poems in this volume reflect this ancient science of mantra. "Man" is the Sanskrit root of the English "mind" and "tra" of our suffix "tron," meaning vehicle. A mantra is a vehicle to carry the mind back to the source of creation, divine silence. Here in the heart, love awakens. Fred LaMotte conceives language in this ancient tradition, where poetry is a means of taking us home, taking us Om. Many of these poems also reflect the tradition of the mystical marriage. Poets of Eastern and Western religions understood the intimate play of soul and spirit as the whisperings of Lover and Beloved. They created a common poetic iconography, a love-language both sensuous and mystical, which we find in Sufi poets like Hafiz, Hindu poets like Mirabai, the Biblical Song of Songs, the Medieval troubadours, and the parables of Jesus. Mystical poetry can dis- solve religious conflict. In this book, I have covered a broad spectrum of topics in my poetry: faith, hope, charity, and love of God and neighbor, as Christ taught us to do. Subjects include church holy days, life and death, sickness, human relations, nature, humor, the changing seasons, the poor, the abused, the addicted, the homeless, pets, and wildlife. Being a WWII veteran, war and those who have served, been injured or died, the MIAs, and patriotism have always been important in my life. Each holiday or season inspires me to write about the current happenings. No two people see things the same, so I enjoy letting others see into my thoughts at the time a poem was written. Writing poetry is a shorthand to express my feelings and emotions on topics that are important to me. I hope you enjoy my poetry and ramblings through a variety of topics. This anthology includes translations of a number of original poems from each of the ten collections of poetry published to date by Spanish poet Ana Maria Fagundo. Its goal is to provide a representative sample of Fagundo's work for an English audience. With the basic tenet of phenomenology as scaffold, the introduction of this anthology elucidates Fagundo's poetic writing as a process whereby the abstract is transformed into a concrete experience through the speaker's own self and body. From Brotes/Buds in 1965 until Trasterrado Marzo/March Beyond in 1999, Fagundo's poetry is an ongoing dialogue with the poetic word.
