Book Description
Excerpt from Bentley's Miscellany, 1852, Vol. 32 Come down, if you would journey there, The little Indian said; And change your cloth for fur clothing, Your vessel for a sled. But lightly laughed the stout Sir John, And the crew laughed with him too A sailor to change from ship to sled, I ween, were something new! All through the long, long polar day, The vessels westward sped; And wherever the sail of Sir John was blown, The ice gave way and fled: Gave way with many a hollow groan, And with many a surly roar. Excerpt from Bentley's Miscellany, 1852, Vol. 31 He was equally conspicuous by the fearlessness and brilliancy of his oratory in support of the second Reform Bill, in the next session. Perhaps his sense of the perilous excitement of that crisis can best be expressed by quoting a passage from one of his essays, where he is evidently referring to the reform agitation of 1831-32. Book Description
Excerpt from Bentley's Miscellany, Vol. 17 The afternoon sunlight fell upon the many turrets and spires, and quivered on the vanes and casements of the fine old buildings that then surrounded the carrefour. Across the river the minarets of the Palais de Justice rose in sharp outline against the blue sky, glowing in the ruddy tint together with the campanile at the cor ner of the quay, and the blackened towers of Notre Dame, further in the Ile de la Cite, round which ocks of birds were wheeling in the clear spring air, who had their dwellings amidst the corbels, spouts, and belfries of the cathedral. There was not an old grey gable or corroded Spire which, steeped in the rays of the setting sun, did not blush into light and warmth. And the mild season had drawn all the inhabitants of the houses who were not abroad to their windows, whence they gazed upon the gay crowd below, through pleasant trellises of climbing vegetation, which crept along the pieces of twine latticing the casements. Humble things, indeed, the plants were, -hops, common beans, wild convolvuli, and the like, spread ing from a rude cruche of mould upon the sill but the beams of the sun came through them cheerfully and their shadows danced and trembled on the rude tiled oor as Sportively as on the costly inlaid parquets of the richer quarters of the city. Book Description
Excerpt from Bentley's Miscellany, 1851, Vol. 30 It is notto be supposed that the benefit of the public school system is shared only by the necessitous. The children of respectable citizens, of the platner sort, make up a large part of the attendance. It is computed that only about twenty thousand children of both sexes are found in private schools. There are many free schools Of private charity, some of which receive by law a certain share of public money, as the school of the House of Refuge, various orphan asylums, &c., including, in all, about three thousand five hundred children. The Roman Catholics have some free schools Of their own, but most Roman Catholic children are educated at the public schools. The prodigious amount of immigration (on the day on which we write, we happen to know that the number of steerage passengers arrived in the city is seventeen hundred and seventy-nine, and, on another, within a week, three thousand) - makes this provision for education doubly important; since a large portion Of the hordes thus emptied on these hospitable shores are entirely unable to pay anything for the instruction of their children.
